Misti Chill Paraty Hostel & Pousada, this young and lively hostel, has a great location right on the beachfront -- it is a bit further away from the bus station than many of the other accommodations but the extra effort is worth it in order to reach this warm and friendly place.
The Location
From the bus station you should expect a fifteen-minute walk. Walk North down Rua Manoel S. Padua until you reach Ave. Roberto Silveira, turn right and continue on until you reach Rua Do Comercio, turn left onto this street, walk along and you will cross a bridge over the river, stay on this road following it to the right (Ave. Nossa Sr Dos Remedios) stay on this road until you reach the seafront, turn to your left and walk a short way and you will finally arrive at the hostel!
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are quite nice, clean, and a decent size with en-suite bathrooms. There are no lockers in the dorms but rooms are lockable by key. There are lockers available (a deposit is required) but these are small and only big enough to house your valuables (money, passports). Not all dorms have air conditioning but they do have ceiling fans. Private rooms are available but are quite pricey. The rooms are situated around the common area (courtyard and kitchen) so can be quite noisy at times, while the hostel encourages quiet after midnight sometimes the music continues playing after this hour, if you want an early night bring earplugs!
Common Spaces
As you walk in off the street you will see the reception, common area (open-air courtyard) and kitchen area. There are a few computer terminals for guest use for an extra fee or for those with laptops, Wi-Fi is offered for free. A bar is set up in the evenings when the courtyard comes alive with music and people socialising. The guest kitchen is fairly small but functional with an oven/hob and a fridge/freezer available for guest use; the hostel also offers food on certain nights for a fee. There is plenty of information available on local activities and bus timetables to assist with your onward travel plans.
Summary
Security doesn't appear to be a major concern as access to the premises is easily made via the open courtyard area (during the day), however, this goes hand-in-hand with the general relaxed atmosphere here. The location is very nice, just a few paces and you are literally on the beach. Overall, this sociable hostel run by warm, friendly and helpful staff offers good value for money and has a really nice vibe. It's an ideal place to stay during your time in Paraty.
