Welcome Home!
Cinderland Eco-Village is an Intentional Community, a unique experiment in sustainable land- and human-friendly environment that facilitates the real Hawaiian experience. It provides a comfortable balance between living in the wild and having the most necessary comforts of civilization. Cinderland is located on three sprawling acres on the very East of the Big Island of Hawaii in Kapoho, a few minutes away from Pahoa, Hi, where the weather, all year round, ranges from 75F to 88F (24C to 31C) and the intermittent light rains are very pleasant.
Cinderland is walking distance to many natural attractions: Pacific Ocean shoreline, snorkeling paradise Tide Pools that stretch up to 200 yards wide almost mile along the coast, Warm Pond where you can swim in warm springs water while looking at the ocean, plus Mermaid Ponds, Champagne Ponds known for species not seen elsewhere. A bit further is Pohoiki Bay – great for surfing and picnicking, amazing McKenzie State Park and Lava Tree State Park. A ride away is the world famous Kehena Beach, the only clothing-optional beach on the Big Island, where huge drumming and dancing circles form every Sunday. One can see lava flowing at the Kilauea Volcano, whose glow lights up the low-lying clouds, which can be seen from Kalapana at the end of the Red Road (Hwy 137) Closest shopping is in Pahoa Town which has a supermarket, many shops and restaurants, a Natural Foods store (our favorite) and many other attractions. Almost every day there is a Farmer’s Market where local farms sell their produce.
Cinderland is literally in the jungle, surrounded by greenery, palms and fruiting trees. Staying here requires a a very reasonable donation plus 5 hours of community service a week. One gets a bed, linen and a storage locker in a co-ed or a ladies’ dorm, filtered drinking and shower water, cooking gas and electricity in the evenings. It is a breath of fresh air compared to cramped and more expensive hostels.
.
Community service may include working in our Organic Permaculture gardens, caring for the trees, making new camps, arranging lava rocks for new gardens, collecting ocean-smoothed rocks for floors and walkways, and other fun, team activities. It is a great place to learn organic farming and sustainable living techniques.
One can cook either in one’s dorm or the Community Kitchen, find some harvested bananas, coconuts, Jack Fruit, papaya, ( please add more here ) and other exotic fruits ripening on the trees nearby. Our gardens provide a wide array of edible greens, spices and beautiful plants. Most of the salads for our big Taco Tuesdays potluck, come from the garden. This weekly, family friendly event attracts lots of friends and musicians – probably the most exciting thing happening for miles around!
