Dijembe Backpackers Hostel - The Didge Reviews

Dijembe Backpackers Hostel - The Didge is one of the more unusual backpacker hostels in South Africa. As you enter the property through the front gate, you cross the front garden with its unusual water features, hanging sculptures, and general inventive recycling of bits of junk. This gives a fair reflection of what you'll find inside.

The Location

Storms River offers travelers beautiful nature, forest hikes, and adventure sports and is a key stop on the south coast route. The easy-to-find Dijembe is located on the corner of Formosa and Assegaai Streets in tiny Storms River, and is signposted. It is just a five-minute walk from the center of the village, where the mini-market, restaurants, and bars are located, and is a stop on the Baz Bus route.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Downstairs, you'll find two private rooms -- one family room for four people and a double room, both en suite. Upstairs, you'll find another family room and the ten-bed dorm. In keeping with rustic nature of this lodge, the dorm beds are all made of untreated logs and are as sturdy as you can find. The mattresses are thick and firm and the duvets are warm. There are power points scattered around the dorm and the walls are decorated with murals and comments from past guests. There are two triple-decker and two double-decker bunks. The shared bathrooms are basic, but get the job done and they are clean with twenty-four-hour hot water.

Common Spaces

It's like an old junk shop -- an old piano, some old telephones, a pram, and a large teddy bear decorate the house. In the garden, there is a firepit, which is lit at night, especially during the cold winter months; there is also a fireplace in the sitting room. The sitting room has a couple of old, cushioned sofas and guests will find a games room upstairs outside the dorm with a pool table. This leads out to a wooden sun deck overlooking the front garden, where chameleons are often found.

The kitchen is not particularly modern, in keeping with the rest of the house. Guests will not find a microwave or toaster. What they have here is a four-ring gas cooker plus two other gas rings, a gas kettle, and two fridges. There are braai (BBQ) facilities, and sometimes the staff cook up a big dinner for guests. As with its partner hostel in Jeffreys Bay, pancakes are served free each morning from 8 a.m., and there is also free tea, coffee, and sugar all day. Guests will also find the small bar at the reception desk. Free Wi-Fi is also free here, and the signal is pretty good throughout the house.

Summary

The word "rustic" was coined for places like this, and it has oodles of charm and a fantastic atmosphere. While it's short on creature comforts, it is without a doubt a happy and fun place to stay. Dijembe has horses for trips into the forests and they also have a pizza restaurant and bar in the center of the village. Many activities can be organized here, too, so you'll never be bored, but nobody is pressured into getting out and about if you just want to chill out for a day or two. The atmosphere is the big draw card here, and it has plenty of that.

Description

If the idea of experiencing the beauty of the Tsitsikamma forest from horseback or by mountain bike after a hearty breakfast sounds ‘lekker' then DiJembe Backpackers Lodge is the place for you, just step out of the bar and you're good to go. And that's just for starters: bungy off the worlds highest single-span bridge, foofie-slide through forests and over rivers, or throw yourself out of a plane! We'll book you in and shuttle you almost anywhere further than a stone's throw. If you're still going strong challenge Tiger (yes, he's a dog…but not just any dog!) to a game of soccer. Exhausted? Just chose your chill-out spot: get square satellite-TV eyes in our toasty fire-warmed lounge, park off in a hammock, exchange stories around the bonfire beside Frog City, or soak up the stars from inside the upper-deck Jacuzzi. Our delicious veggie-friendly meals will have you drumming the night away. A good nights rest in a comfy bed and you'll be ready for another days adventuring. Further a-field you'll find birds of Eden and Monkey Land amongst the Garden Route's treasures…buy a locally made drum and spread the DiJembe spirit wherever you go.
