Get to know Munich (no more

Munich has a reputation as the beer capital of the world and it certainly lives up to that expectation. Bavaria is known for being laid-back and gemütlich, and Munich manages to combine this with poshness and sophistication.

If you are looking for a hostel in Munich, you may want to try to stay in the old city center (Altstadt). Other good locations are Maxvorstadt and Schwabing. Schwabing is particularly good if you like to party; this is where lots of students and young professionals live and it has a wide range of nightlife spots. Munich hostels tend to be on the expensive side, but you will be rewarded with high quality rooms and friendly service. If you are planning on visiting the Oktoberfest (September/ October each year), book your hostel well in advance since Munich will be packed. By the way, the second weekend of the Oktoberfest is "Italian Weekend," so be aware there will be an extra very large crowd of Italians there that weekend, making it extra crazy (for better or worse, depending on your point of view).

Munich is widespread and sights are not all in the same area, so you are dependent on the public transport system, which fortunately is extensive and operates frequently. Discounted daily and weekly tickets are available. The airport can also be accessed by public transport.

While in Munich, visit the fabulous Pinakotheken – there are three of them and they contain art which is arranged by the time it was acquired. The German museum is one of the world’s most extensive science museum and astonishes every age group. Check out the brand new Brandhorst museum, which hosts a private collection of cutting-edge modern art and the building is an artwork itself. Try some authentic Bavarian food and order a beer in a one-litre glass at Hofbräuhaus.

There are plenty of excellent Munich hostels to choose from, so enter the dates of your stay to search for availability, and enjoy your trip!
