Hostal Antiguo Reviews

Hostal Antiguo is a stylish and well-equipped hostel located in the Candelaria district of Medellín. It offers four- to ten-bed dorms as well as private rooms. Dorms are clean and bright, with spacious lockers for your belongings. There are many communal areas including a dining area, outside patio, TV lounge, and computer area, all of which are spacious and stylishly decorated. The hostel is usually fairly quiet and would not be ideal for those looking to meet other travelers.

We are impressed by the cleanliness, design, and beautiful decor, but the location of the hostel tends to divide opinions. Hostal Antiguo is well located for sight-seeing in the centre, and perhaps offers a more genuine view of Medellín than touristy areas such as El Poblado. However, there are problems with homelessness, drug use, and prostitution in the area, and it is not safe to walk around after dark.

The Location

With sights such as Antioquia Museum and Plaza Botero just a few minutes walk away, Hostal Antiguo is well located for everything you want to see in the city centre. The metro station Parque Berrio is ten minutes' walk away. If arriving by plane, there is a public bus from the airport that will drop you at Hotel Nutibara, a thirteen-minute walk from the hostel (there are two buses, so make sure to get on the correct one!).

The area does not feel safe due to high rates of homelessness, prostitution, and drug use in the streets surrounding the hostel. These problems are noticeable during the day and night, but hostel staff advise that it is safe to walk around outside up until 7 p.m.; walking at night in the area is not advised, not even for short distances. Those looking for tourist-friendly bars and nightlife would be better off searching in another area such es El Poblado or Laureles. However, many guests of Hostal Antiguo feel that this location offers a more genuine view of life in Medellín in comparison to more touristy areas, and those wanting to eat and drink like a local will find many budget-friendly bars and cafes nearby.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are clean, bright, and spacious. Large and fairly comfortable bunk beds come with clean sheets, a towel, and individual light and plug socket. Lockers are big enough to fit a backpack and come with padlocks.

The bathrooms are clean and modern. There are just two communal bathrooms for dorm users (one male bathroom and one female bathroom). Each bathroom has one toilet and one shower with hot and cold water. The hostel is not usually crowded and we never found the shared bathroom to be a problem during our stay, but on days when the hostel is busier you may have to wait for the bathroom!

Common Spaces

There are numerous common spaces including a shared kitchen, dining area, outside patio, TV lounge, and computer area. All common areas are clean, well designed, and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is well stocked. Wi-Fi is available in common areas, but does not reach all bedrooms.

Summary

Hostal Antiguo stands out for its beautiful decor and calm atmosphere. The central location in La Candelaria will appeal to travelers who want to experience local culture, but high levels of homelessness and prostitution in this area may make some people feel unsafe, especially at night.
