• You’re spoilt for choice for walks amongst the fells. From the village you can start an ascent of the popular route up Helm Crag — known locally as The Lion and the Lamb, due to the shape of rock formations on the summit — to the Northwest, or take a longer trek up onto Helvellyn and Fairfield to the East.
• Due to it’s central location, Grasmere gives you access to a whole host of popular walks — from low-level hikes around the Cumbria’s stunning lakes, to some of the most stunning mountain routes in the UK.
• Grasmere is also on the route of Alfred Wainwright’s popular Coast to Coast walk, and one of the alternative Coast to Coast mountain bike routes also passes through the village. In fact, if travelling on two wheels is your preference, there are hundreds of miles of track and bridleway for you to explore, with some rewarding — and challenging! — high level routes throughout the region. Grasmere is now also home to the start of the gruelling Fred Whitton Challenge, taking in all the high mountain passes by bicycle.
• Feel like taking it easier and exploring some of the Lakes cultural hotspots? Grasmere itself has plenty of places to explore, including Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum, and the Heaton Cooper Gallery.
• If you’re looking for some tasty morsels, there’s a whole host of places to eat in the village, including some fine restaurants and some cosy, traditional pubs serving up fine local ales. And don’t forget to visit the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop.
• ON FOOT
• From the bus stop in Grasmere centre follow Easedale Road leading north from the village green for 1/4 mile – you will go past Butharlyp How YHA, several small groups of houses and over a small bridge (Goody Bridge).
• At a junction Thorney How Hostel is signposted (small brown sign) right 400yds.
• Follow the narrow winding and rising lane past a group of houses and woodland. Thorney How is then on your left – via an unmade track that leads uphill for about 50yds by a Grit Bin. You will need a torch at night as the roads are unlit.

• Traveling North
• From the A591 traveling north on approaching Grasmere go past the roundabout junction near to the Wordsworth Trust signposted Grasmere Village. Instead take the next left hand turn 1/2 mile further on also signposted Grasmere Village and opposite to The Swan Hotel.
• This is Swan Lane (B5287) leading to Broadgate. Follow this into the village for 1/2 mile – Easedale Road is immediately on the right as you reach the village green having just passed the Coop Store.
• Follow as for on foot above.
• If you pass the side track to Thorney How you will reach a farm and eventually come back to the A591.
• Traveling south
• From the A591 approaching Grasmere shortly after the first 40 mph sign either take a right hand turn on a sharp bend opposite a post box, currently unsignposted leading to a single track lane. Follow this to a small bridge. Take the left hand fork after the bridge onto another narrow lane with limited passing places for approximately ½ mile. After passing a farm on the right the road twists and drops down hill. A right hand turn leads to an unmade track leading uphill for about 50yds by a Grit Bin. This will be properly signposted in the future. If you pass this track you will eventually come back to Easedale Road and into Grasmere village.
• Alternatively take the next right hand turn opposite the Swan Hotel signposted Grasmere village and follow directions as for traveling north above.
