Hostel Stara Praga - Wiatraczna Reviews

Hostel Krokodyl is a very cheap hostel for short and long stays; it's located a few kilometers away from the center, but it's easily accessible by convenient trams.

The Location

The hostel is located in historical district of Praga Południe, which wasn't destroyed during World War II. The hostel is ten minutes away from Rondo Wiatraczna, a local transport hub, surrounded by many bars, kebab shops, and a McDonald's. It is not one of the safest places in Warsaw, so if you are planning to walk alone after dark, this hostel might not be the best choice.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are quite big and equipped with a wide windows, which is really helpful during hot and crowded nights. There are also lockers (available for free) where you can put your valuables (actually, the lockers are so big that you might be able to put your whole luggage there). Bunked beds are comfortable, but they make a lot of noise when you (or your “neighbor”) slightly move in the bed. Rooms are also equipped with clothing hangers and small tables.

Bathrooms are located on every floor, so there should be no problem with long queues. They are also really clean with plenty of toilet paper and hand soap. The only issue is there is no place (except the bathroom on third floor) to put your things in a shower cabin (although, there are hangers and a warm towel dryer just next to it, if you don’t mind leaving the cabin naked).

Common Spaces

When the night falls, the hostel seems to be a very dark place -- it has lights, but those are activated automatically and turn off often. You might want to avoid leaving a room in the night or at least use your phone as a flashlight. Some of the decorations look like they are decades old and one of the sofas is really disgusting.

The hostel has a fancy and clean kitchen, where you can prepare all kinds of foods, except frying fish (which is not allowed). Next to a kitchen, there is a dining room with plenty of space and an LED TV. When the weather is good, you can also use a small patio with a grill, located outside (ask the reception for details).

Wi-Fi access might be quite confusing -- the hostel doesn't mention it anywhere (at least we haven't found any information about it), but they have it and it is free. There are few Wi-Fi networks within a hostel, and when we asked in reception for passwords, we were given three different ones. After trying for a while, none of them actually worked. Another issue is lack of access to electric sockets in rooms, so you'd better take a power bank with you or use a socket in the corridor, if it is not already taken by a fellow traveler.

Reception looks really good, however some staff members have no idea about the hostel's surroundings. We asked if there is any place to eat/shop still open during night hours and a receptionist said she has no idea. We left and asked a random person on the street the same question and he showed us a twenty-four/seven market about two hundred meters away. You have to check-in before midnight, but we were going to arrive around 1:30 a.m., and after calling the reception desk they said it is completely fine to do so.

Summary

Hostel Krokodyl offers more than it seems by looking at the price. If you are fine with using public transport, you will have no troubles with getting to the hostel. There are different kinds of people coming to spend a night here, but staff are most definitely kind!

Location and Contact

Location

Take tram 9 or 24 from Centrum to Rondo Wiatravlna (direction - Praga), about 9 stops from the city centre (15-20 minutes). The hostel is located behind the large "Universam Grochow" shopping market, 2 streets from the tram stop. The easiest access route is to walk through the market (which is sided by Czapelska street and the main street) and look for the large, white sign with a crocodile on it, visible from either end of Czapelska street.
