Nice Travel Tips & Suggestions

Nice is not a culture city. It's got sea and beach -- so expensive too. The population is unfriendly too. It's better to stay in any other cities around!

I loved it -- real nice place. The people did not really know much English, but nonetheless it was welcoming, safe, and had very nice balconies to look upon the streets. There was a bit of a walk to the beach, but hey we all need a little exercise every now and then and it helped to see the area. Nice rules!

It's nice visiting Nice. I have seen lots of things that everybody wants to see.

Nice is nice for people who are more interested in going to the (rocky) beach and bars than cultural things. If you are in a hurry, don´t get stuck here as you can see the whole city in one day. One day in Monaco and Cannes is a must. Certain areas are dangerous at night. Another hostel guest got robbed at night during my stay. So don't go out at night by yourself! The city is very expensive and during the summer 2006 the whole main street was under construction, so it wasn´t that pretty. Don´t miss the old town.

Just an amazing city!

It's a magical place so full of beautiful old colourful buildings and quaint streets. The beach sucked but being from Australia we tend to be spoiled. We loved the sights sounds and smells of Nice and the people were lovely. Our biggest regret was we couldn't spend more time there.

Postcard perfect sceneries. The train is a marvelous mode of travel. Although my French is very limited, there were kind souls who helped along the way. The best memories include watching the yachts bobbing in the aqua meditranean sea from the top of the old castle in Nice, the garden in Monaco, the Picasso museum in Antibe, and the seaside in Cannes. I also treasure the train ride back from Monaco at night, along the coast, watching the moonlight rippling on the sea. We did all the daytrips spontaneously and every one of them turned out to be beautiful. The only surprise was the pebbly beach in Nice and the chilly water. It was interesting but a bit of a let down as in tropical coastal Malaysia, our beaches are sandy and the water warm. But one should go to Nice not for the beaches but for the ambience, the French, the food, and the charming old towns and cobblestoned streets. I am planning to return to Nice in January 2006 to recapture some of the magic with new friends!

After spending two nights in Nice, I don't know why anyone would want to spend their money and energy on such a dirty, noisy, busy, overpriced city, with a rocky beach and nothing to see or do. We spent our time in Monaco instead. Before you make Nice a stop on your trip, ask yourself why you are going. If you want to lounge around on the beach, try one of the quieter, neighboring cities with sandy beaches.

Nice is amazingly beautiful and full of things to do. You can wander the streets in search or the Russian Cathedral and encounter many beautiful parks and buildings on the way. You can also spend a lot of time in Villa Nice (Old Nice)..its amazing...every morning and evening during the summer there is a flower market where the farmers from the surrounding area come in and sell fruit, plants, flowers, candy, fish, spices, and many other unique items. The streets are lined with beautiful little shops and outdoor cafes and walking along the beach is great. It is very rocky but the views are amazing. Be sure to climb up the ruins of an old castle for some of the most beautiful pictures youll ever take. It is also extremely easy to get to Canne, Villefranche, Monaco and Menton. We went to different places each day and would return to Nice each evening to eat outside under heat lamps in the cafes. Canne has sandy beaches if that is what you are looking for, Menton is known for having the warmest beaches though they are rocky, Villefranche is not touristy at all but a great morning could be spent walking through the streets of this little french town, and Monaco has a lot of great attractions including the aquarium, views of the sea and all the yachts and a gorgeous garden you could spend hours wandering through. Nice is my favorite place in the world. The only negative is that public transportation can be a problem if you don't speak any French. (I didn't but it was still okay, just difficult.)

Nice is beautiful. Although rocky, the beach is spectacular. You MUST go to the Ice Cream place in the center of Vielle Nice, it has like 100 flavours (try one scoop of rhubarb, and one scoop of strawberry). Do not even bother trying to get ice cream from anywhere else because it would never be able to match this place. Try having Moulles et Frites (mussels and fries) from Lou Pilha Leva at 13 rue du Collet in Vielle Nice!

Nice is a very frantic city, but beautiful. The beaches aren't the best, I would suggest going to Monaco for Villefranche for that (both are easy to get to, the bus goes straight from one end of the Cote d'Azur to the other, so you can't really miss it). Old Nice is very reminscent of Venice, you MUST find the ice cream/gelato place, it's easy to recognize once you find your way through the maze of Old Nice. Ask to try the olive, it's an experience.

Nice... I love it. It's crowded and full of Americans (no offence) but if you speak French and meet locals it adds to the experience so much. The weather is beautiful, the rocky beach can be surprisingly comfortable if you work at it, and the sunset is absolutely beautiful. Also I had the best pizza and gelato there...who knew? Oh and GO TO THE PUBLIC BEACH IN CANNES! You will not regret it plus the train ride is very scenic.

Nice is cool, the beach is crap, but the city awesome. Watch out for crackheads stealing your bags at night. Spend a day here and then hit St. Tropez and look for P Diddy.
Comment by Lisa
Nice is a lovely city! A walk on the promenade by the beach at night is a must, as all sorts of street entertainers populate this place at night! Day trips I would recommend are to Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and St. Tropez.
Comment by Janine
Nice is fabulous! You must go here if you are in France. It is the most beautiful place to visit and be sure to do a trip to Monaco.

You will learn that streets are not marked as obviously in Europe as they are in the states—look up on the corners of the buildings for placards. Train is the likely way you will arrive in Nice if you are a backpacker—just listen up for strikes because the trains and then the trains and the buses went on strike the week I was there which had some people stranded when they were over due to get out of France—but I thought the protesting in the streets was cool—there was singing and music parade-style in the mornings and I sure wanted them to win! And when you are there remember to give give yourself time for daytrips to Cannes and Monaco—it’s just an air conditioned bus ride away (as long as they are not on strike that is!).

Get a reservation somewhere far in advance if you can, especially in the summer. Nice always has a crowd of people who couldn't get beds sleeping outside the train station (it closes at night), and the mosquitos don't make it any easier.
