The Hostelz.com Review
Shoestring Cave Pension is a really cool, good-value hostel in Goreme, Cappadocia, Turkey. The coolest part about this place (and other similar hostels in Goreme) is the way it is built into the hillside caves.
The Location
The hostel is located about two blocks from the center parts of town. From the bus station, head up and to the right. Shoestring signs should guide you the whole way. Turn up a small side street on the right, passing families' doorways, kids, and chickens, and the hostel will be on the left side.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dormitory room is a cave. It's one large room with no doors but the natural cave partitions it into about four spaces, each holding about four bunked beds. The room is extremely dark, especially the back cave spaces, which is great for sleeping. There are some plugs around the rooms for charging your electronics and the beds are fine. Noise travels easily in the cave.
The bathroom is a bit awkward because it is across the courtyard. The sinks are outside so you brush your teeth next to the breakfasters, and the showers are the typical Turkish setup of a handheld faucet over the toilet area, but the water is hot.
Common Spaces
There is an indoor common room with a computer and lots of guidebooks of the area. The staff are happy to help arrange activities for your stay such as ballooning, horseback riding, ATVs, or watching the whirling dervishes.
Outside there are tables where the included breakfast (choice of pancakes, Turkish-style breakfast, omelet, French toast -- quite a good spread) is served as well as nightly barbecues. This is a good place to meet other travelers and have a cigarette. At the top floor of the hostel there is a nice swimming pool and lounge chairs with views of the surreal town and valleys -- definitely a highlight of the hostel.
Summary
One problem with this hostel was the power outages in the afternoons. This may be unavoidable throughout the whole town, but showering by candlelight is not the most luxurious vacation, so keep your flashlight handy at all times -- like we said, those rooms are already dark. However, the staff are friendly and helpful and the location/design of the place is awesome.
