Description
Update 3rd November 2011
New Road Guest House is operating as normal due to the heavy floods in Bangkok.
We will have a stock of food and soft drinks in the hotel. Supply of drinking water is still limited in Bangkok, but we will in the coming days work on getting supplies.
The risk of flooding of the central part of Bangkok is accordingly to authorities now limited, compared to the proceeding days. Our service office in New Road Guest House will naturally inform our clients as to what cautions needs to be taken when exploring Bangkok. The main tourist areas, such as Silom, Ploenchit, Sathorn and Sukhumvit continues to function normally. And at New Road Guest House we have had no flooding until now.
The Northern, Eastern and Western parts of the city are all affected by the floods and especially the Thonburi district, on the other side of the river from New Road Guest House, is now affected.
6 districts have been evacuated: Don Muang, Laksi, Bang Phlat, Sai Mai, Thawee Watthana and Taling Chan.
Suvarnabhumi International Airport is unaffected by the floods and has been heavily fortified so is still unlikely to close. Trains to the North has now been resumed, but with delays, while the train to the South is currently suspended due to flooding. The BTS and MRT are operating as normal and in central Bangkok, life goes on as normal.
It is now possible to stay at New Road Guest House but with caution and understanding that some things may change if the floods will reach the central Bangkok.

Nice and clean Guesthouse in the heart of bangkok close to skytrain, water taxi and shopping mall. Friendly staff and very helpful travel desk. Safe and charge free long term luggage storage! Our second time in that Guesthouse and we definitely would come back again!

We have been 4 times in Bangkok the last 2 months and we have stayed here all of them, we really recommend it. Close to skytrain and taxi boat, so you can go to a lot of places in town very easily and cheap. Taxi boat to Grand Palace or Khao San Rd takes 20 min and costs 14 THB. A taxi from Khao San Rd at night with no traffic is just 70 THB. There is a supermarket just 5 min walking, with plenty of local stands/restaurants around. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they speak very well English. There is a DVD romm with AC where to stay in your own. Free wifi. Free coffee and tea.

I liked the fact that the guest services staff were incredibly nice and helpful. I also liked that it was a 10 minute walk to the ferry so that you can get the hell out of that horrible area.

Friendly and useful staff are avaiable for 24 hours. They will give you any detail information which you need. The lobby look clean.
The first 2 nights I booked a cheap twin room. It is pretty small and hot. Nothing except for 2 single beds. It's ok for me after travelling all day then just lay down and sleep. However my sister felt uncomfortable. We changed to a room with 900bath per night 2 nights after. The room is good, included a bathroom and hot water + a fridge and much bigger.
The Location is good - 10mins walking from sky train station and about 100 - 150 bath for tuk tuk or taxi to go to Khao San, shopping center and other places.

Earlier on in our trip, we had already stayed at a guesthouse off of Khao San and, in my opinion, the people who slate New Road purely for its location are either party animals or simply booked the cheapest option on the list without looking at a map... because this was ten times better. Sure it may not have had an abundance of bars on the doorstep, but to say that it was cheaper, it had far more going for it. Use the money you've saved on the room in getting a tuk-tuk north, because it's a better idea in my opinion.
I was very concerned about cries of bedbugs on here, but we were fine - and my partner looked very confused when the first thing I did upon entering the room was overturn the mattress. The room was, admittedly, very small, but you could tell that they'd made an effort in decor and it felt quite bright. And it also felt very cool; we kept the window shut due to my 'insect paranoia' but it was easily the coolest room we'd been in all holiday. This was a 'backpacker' room with double bed and fan.
One of the nicest touches about our room was that we had a mini-bar, which we could also use as our own fridge - but it contained two complementary bottles of water per day. And, as well as cleaning the room every one of our four days, replacing the soap, toilet roll and even shampoo sachets, two 500ml bottles of water were popped into our fridge daily. The mini-bar was also quite reasonable, as was the very nice restaurant downstairs, contained within the lovely air-conditioned reception/lounge area.
The staff were friendly and, though we read signs of free tourist info, we'd been in Bangkok a while and chose not to take it. We really liked the location because it was quiet and within walking distance (even on my little legs) of the train station and skytrain station Saphan Taksin, the latter of which making it cheap to get into downtown Bangkok without arguing with a tuk-tuk driver. There were markets and vendors nearby, though things seemed to be priced higher than the Khao San Road. Plus, my partner was thrilled, due to the amount stamp shops around this guesthouse... Don't know if there are many philatelists on HostelBookers, but there ya go!
Besides that, we had free towels/bedding; it felt safe; it wasn't noisy; it was very cheap; and it was the best sleep I'd had on the holiday, due to the coolness of the room.

Pretty cheap, nice large beds and good internet wireless. Place is clean and it's got a good atmosphere. Streets around are lively and nice to walk through. It's not far from the river where you can get the boat for 14 baht.

It was tucked away in an alley, so quiet. The restaurant, couch area, and internet bar was a nice place.

The staff is nice and kindly. The guest house is really clean, the wifi is for free and you can leave your luggage for free and do small trips. The staff of Visit Beyond, the attached travel agency is helpfull and kindly. The location is really good. Stay away of Ko San Road was a big relieve! Is near of the skytrain station and not far of the tourist points. The restaurant is nice and the price is ok. We stayed one week more.

Fantastic Definitely one of the best hostels we've stayed in. We're even going to stay in their hostel in Hanoi. — D , England (2007-12-08)

Good Nice hostel. If you're big on the party atmosphere this is your hostel. It seemed like every night many guest gathered in the bar, drinking, chatting, and playing pool. The two dorm rooms are mixed dorms with six bunk beds in each, housing twelve people. In the middle of November the dorm rooms were hardly bearable as far as heat with that many bodies. — words spit out (2007-11-20)
