3 My wife and I were traveling on a bit of budget. This summer has been unusually warm and as a couple we appreciate our privacy. How can we find a private bathroom, a quiet room, and air conditioning in budget accomodations though? Well, Morningside helped us out. The room was small, granted. The bed left a bit to be desired. However, the room was quiet. We had a window AC unit that worked well, a ceiling fan, a private bathroom with a great shower, even a closet complete with hangers. All this for less than $120/night. The subway was about three blocks away and without transferring we were right in Times Square each day. We asked for fresh towels daily and received such. We also asked for extra pillows and got them. What we didn't get was rude service or "front desk attitude" so popular in budget minded acommodations. I was a little put out that there was no available internet in our room but with a Starbucks two blocks away it wasn't a deal breaker! I do make one recommendation. Make sure to enjoy the coffee and pastries at 'Garden of Eden' market just one and a half blocks away.

1 I had a horrible experience trying to get a room at this hotel. I had a reservation for a triple, which was not ready for me when I tried to check in (about 5:00). My friends and I returned to the hotel a few more times, only to be put off and put off, until we were finally told that there WERE no triples, and we would have to be split up. When I tried to ask for a discount for the inconvenience, I was told that I was "lucky" that they were giving me a room at all (I had actually reserved this room three weeks prior). My friends and I ended up finding another hotel.

1 This is not what I consider a HOTEL, but rooms for rent by the underclass. We stayed one night and had a room with two beds in it. The beds were very poor. You had to share a very small bathroom and the live-ins were up cooking in the shared kitchen in the late hours of the night. There was a mix-up in our billing that still hasn't been corrected. We were double charged. This is a very poor hotel, with poor service and poor quality. Avoid it at all costs. We ended up leaving after one night, and lost all the money we put down.

1 I stay in New York City several times a year. I don't have much money and I'm always looking for good, inexpensive accommodations. I had to book at the last minute for my last trip and not much was available in my price range so I thought I'd take a risk and try this place with no recommendation. I don't think I'd do it again. On the up side it is very inexpensive and convenient to public transportation and in a trendy neighborhood with good restaurants. On the down side there are absolutely no amenities. No room TV, no room phone, no radio, no air-conditioning, no view. So if you plan to spend any time at all in your hotel room besides sleeping and cleaning up, forget about it. There was a shared bath, which was fairly clean. On the other hand, if all you really want is a place to sleep, besides the subway, there are fewer less expensive places that I am aware of and the location is great. There were no towels provided when I first arrived, though the desk clerk did provide them on request. He was however unable to provide an extra pillow on request. For the single traveler there are better deals in New York City and if you are travelling with someone and want to stay here, make sure that they are not at all demanding.

1 Having made a reservation almost a month in advance, I called to confirm my reservation the night before. The manager was actually pleased that I called. He said that Expedia had sent him a block of bookings that morning they had mistakenly accepted for rooms already booked. He wanted me to understand that the Expedia bookings were more important than mine were, and for that reason he no longer had a room available to honor the reservation already booked to my credit card. I said that I had a reservation and commitments that were not subject to his staff's error. He said he had a contract with Expedia that he had to honor. I said he had a reservation with me that he had to honor. He said fine; your reservation is now canceled and he hung up. There were no hotels in New York available on 24 hours notice for less than four times the price I reserved for, and they all were across town from my presentation and lecture commitments. Throughout the world, whether it's the first, second or third world, this is considered unacceptable behavior. I expected more from a hostel in New York. Caveat emptor.
