Because my experience was so terrible at this hotel, I am in dire need to warn others about the experience i had and what to expect. I stayed at this hotel for the last two nights of my ten-day trip to Costa Rica. First of all, I am from the U.S., and I have traveled the world. With that said, I was not so naive as to arrive at this hotel expecting them to roll out the red carpet for me. I speak English, and enough Spanish to get me by. But not only did the people not speak english at the desk (which is fine by me), they did not care that I only spoke a little spanish and did not make any effort to assist me. When there were language barriers, they just looked at me with an annoyed eye, hoping that i would just leave. Seems as though they do not care whether or not they had my business. Secondly, this hostel is terrible when it comes to customer service. I asked repeatedly if there was anything to do in Liberia, if there were any trips they could help organize, or if there were any organizations or places that they could send me to to get information. Not only did they not know, but they offered no help whatsoever in helping arrange anything. Now, i realize that I should have done some research, and I did, but they did nothing to point me in the right direction of the attractions/activities that i wanted to do. When i asked, all they gave me was "sorry no" and thats it. The rest is up to me. Third, the receptionists are cheats. When I purchased my room, the first receptionist charged me an exchange rate of 518 colones/$. The next day I went to try to book a trip to parque rincon de la vieja, and the other receptionist charged me an exchange rate of 530 colones/$. I told her the other exchange rate, and she simply said "no." The second receptionist was even at the front desk when I got the first exchange rate of 518 colones/$, and yet, she still tried to cheat me. Fourth, despite all the reviews as to the cleanliness of this institution, this place is dirty. Trying to be as unbiased as possible. I spent two nights at this place. During the first night there, it was absolutely horrible. I ended up being bitten all over my body and it was so bad that i stayed up half the night scratching. Figured it must have been mosquitoes. So during the night, i slept with socks, pants, a long sleeve shirt, and under the cover of two sheets (which, considering that the temperature was eighty degrees F and 40% humidity, was absolutely horrible). Once again, i had bug bites all over my body. Turns out the bed that I was sleeping in was infested with bedbugs. I went to a doctor and confirmed that the bites I received (over fifty bites just on my left arm) were from bedbugs and not mosquitoes. And finally, I reserved reservations for a $10/night single room at this hotel. I came in and gave them my booking confirmation number, and they did not have it. Not only that, even though they had $10/night single rooms available, they put me in a $15/night single room and charged me for it. The administration at this facility is absolutely horrible. So in conclusion, if you want to make your trip to Liberia, Costa Rica as painful, irritable, and awful as possible, please visit Hotel Guanacaste.
