Clean hotel with friendly staff
This place is definitely one of the better choices in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Pricing is a bit above the Vietnamese hotel standards, but at this place you do get what you pay for. Twenty-four/seven free internet (fast computers!), really clean and good facilities and friendly and helpful staff (when it comes to booking train or plane tickets, tours). To Hoan Kiem lake it's a five-minute walk and basically everything lies within walking distance. There's a free pick-up service if you arrive by train or bus!

A terrible, dirty hotel - complete with rats!
This is an old hotel property, unlike some of its advertising that says it was built a couple of years ago. Recently I had the msifortune of staying there in order to rate the hotel. It discourages long stay guests as they reduce the opportunity to sell tours, etc. to guests. The hotel owner rents the property to anyone who thinks they can make a go of it and as a result there are always new operators - all cutting corners in an attempt to make a profit. The rooms have satellite TV, that requires retuning, and an old, worn mini-bar. They claim "There is a common lounge for all of our guests to share their experiences" - unfortunately this appeared to missing in 2007 August and certainly people do share their experinces - of the Ha Noi Blue Sky - and staff members try to listen in and argue with guests voicing negative opinions. They do have three old computers - connected to the ADSL broadband feed - along with a WiFi setup that only just makes it to the first floor which forces computer owners to crowd into the small dining room. The 'restaurant' is actually part of the front lobby - the kitchen more of a cupboard. The front desk doubles as a tour desk - maybe that should be the tour desk doubles as the Front Desk - as they seem to be more interested in selling tours than rooms. Whilst there a guest declined a tour saying it was cheaper 'down the road' at which point he was told his room was needed on the proposed date of his return and that he should not leave his baggage there. The rooms have small glass vents - the inner two columns of rooms get their 'fresh air' from these vents which open onto a vertical box that carries the exhaust smoke fumes from the 'bar' / 'dining room' along with the smells from the room toilets. The poo air-con units expelled smoky smelling air as they are in dire need of cleaning. My room was filthy - I asked the desk if the cleaner wanted in - with dust balls and a instant coffee packet hidden behind the room door. The bathroom was unclean with 'body fluids' (urine) showing when tested with special chemicals. The bathrooms fittings were old and worn and the constantly running toilet and dripping bath taps made sleeping difficult. I tried to use the WiFi in the lobby in the middle of the night but the n ight watchmen didn't have the password (I plugged into the LAN hub). Whilst computing in the erstwhile 'dining room' (overnight) I was entertained by the antics of nine rats who seemed totally immune to my presence. Finally, there are reports by guests of thefts from their baggage left at the hotel whilst absent on tours. Having seen the night staff sleeping soundly I do not believe it is them - rather other guests who can access left baggage unsupervised. Please, walk further down Hang Ga - there are many hotels available for under the USD$18 I was charged!

Two faced staff... Welcoming only till you are booked in
When our bus droped us off from our open tour we ended up at this hotel and were told rooms for $10, seeing we are on a tight budget we told them thank you but we would find a cheaper room else were, then they offered us a special rate of $6. They were under the impression we would book all tours with them so when they discoverd at 5pm of our 2nd day that we booked with an outside company we were told to either pay them $10 for the rate now or pack up and leave!! We were so shocked that in our 17months of travelling S.E.A we had never been treated so rude!! They yelled and made us feel in the wrong for not booking with them,,,,,,,,,,,, Also don't be shocked if what they offer as free is indeed not free!! Your best to book else where, you'll enjoy your vacation loads more.
