It sounds like David's Flat is some guy's apartment with a spare bed -- and that's a bit what David's Flat is, but it's much better than expected. It is an apartment flat with three rooms full of bunk beds, a very small kitchen, and a sitting room. The place is pretty small, but it has a lot of character and it's much quieter than the large hostels normally found in Rome.
The staff are great, although not always extremely helpful with your problems. David (the owner) does try to offer services above and beyond the normal hostel, so there's free internet available twenty-four hours with no daily limits, you get a coupon for a free coffee and croissant at a cafe right down the road, and the reception is open twenty-four hours a day so you're able to come and go at will.
The kitchen is more of a sink with a Bunsen burner, so don't come expecting much. You're pretty much limited to cooking spaghetti, of which there is plenty in Rome. Also, there are only two bathrooms for the entire hostel so you may have to wait a while.
David's Flat has a good location for those coming and going from the train station. It's about a fifteen-minute walk from the station, and near a metro line to access other areas of the city. Rome isn't too big, so you can walk most places you need to go, but David's Flat is not centrally located.
We enjoyed our stay at David's Hostel -- it is a good place. It's not very social, but if you're looking for a place that offers good services, is laid-back, and different than the normal hostel, stay here!
