The Hostelz.com Review
It sounds like David's Flat is some guy's apartment with a spare bed -- and that's a bit what David's Flat is, but it's much better than expected. It is an apartment flat with three rooms full of bunk beds, a very small kitchen, and a sitting room. The place is pretty small, but it has a lot of character and it's much quieter than the large hostels normally found in Rome.

The staff are great, although not always extremely helpful with your problems. David (the owner) does try to offer services above and beyond the normal hostel, so there's free internet available twenty-four hours with no daily limits, you get a coupon for a free coffee and croissant at a cafe right down the road, and the reception is open twenty-four hours a day so you're able to come and go at will.

The kitchen is more of a sink with a Bunsen burner, so don't come expecting much. You're pretty much limited to cooking spaghetti, of which there is plenty in Rome. Also, there are only two bathrooms for the entire hostel so you may have to wait a while.

David's Flat has a good location for those coming and going from the train station. It's about a fifteen-minute walk from the station, and near a metro line to access other areas of the city. Rome isn't too big, so you can walk most places you need to go, but David's Flat is not centrally located.

We enjoyed our stay at David's Hostel -- it is a good place. It's not very social, but if you're looking for a place that offers good services, is laid-back, and different than the normal hostel, stay here!

Very cool
my stay at davids flat was really awesome. if you're a traveler on your own it's the perfect place to go. it's really close to the main sights (ten minutes' walk to the colosseum) and you get to meet so many people inside the flat. plus, the people who work there are so friendly! they were always happy to help. just remember, it's only a hostel, not a hotel, so don't expect it to be perfect. maybe you have to wait to take a shower sometimes, and there's not so much space in the rooms, but if you're flexible that shouldn't be a problem. and about breakfast, everybody always complained but you have to know, we're in italy. italians have a coffee and a croissant for breakfast. and nothing else. so if you wanna experience the real italy, accept that!

Somewhat deceptive
Just calling this little place a hostel is misleading. It was nearly impossible to find because the entrance is down a dark alley. The pictures on some websites of beautiful, clean, bright rooms are completely false. It includes only a few rooms with so many beds crammed into each room that there is hardly any place to put luggage. I had requested to stay in a female-only room and when I arrived, no such room existed. So I had to sleep in a room of primarily men. They also advertised a complimentary breakfast, which really meant that I received a voucher at some shop several blocks away for a free brioche (croissant) and a cup of coffee. I was not able to find the shop. The reason that I'm giving two stars instead of one is that the staff was helpful and the location is excellent -- many of the big sites in Rome are within walking distance. So for those reasons and so that I wouldn't have to move my luggage, I actually stayed at David's Flat for three nights -- (all three spent in a co-ed room, by the way).

The directions were terrible. The map provided did not specifically show the location and the hostel was very difficult to find. There is no exterior sign, only a door buzzer for "David's Flat." The room was dirty, incredibly small, and the TV did not work properly -- there was no remote. The shower drain was clogged. There was no lift (elevator) and we had to climb six flights to the accommodation. There was no evidence of an air conditioner. Two staff members were very helpful. Two staff members were abrupt and conflicting in their information concerning airport shuttle service. The only good part was the location to the Colosseum and the Roman forum. If you're in your twenties and hiking your way through Italy, this may work for you. But don't go there simply because it's cheap.

I've never seen such a bad place to live. The rooms are too small, the personnel is unfriendly and don't wear the appropriate attire, it's very chaotic, and the air conditioner don't work. But the most horrible thing are the bathrooms. There are only two small and dirty ones for even thirty people. If you like to take a shower, you have to wait, normally twenty minutes. I met a lot of bugs and spiders there. Sorry, but that's disgusting! You can't use the internet, because there is only one computer, always used by the receptionist. The area outside the hotel is dark and stinking. If you like to visit Rome, don't stay at David's Flat. It's really disgusting.

The experience in this hostel was horrible since the first time i stept in. The worst of it was the personnel there, they are really unkind, screaming to you all the time, and they are liars too cause there is no kitchen, also not internet in the room (only at the reception for them), and there are too many people in the same space of one room. The pictures of the website aren't from David's flat. I was so disappointed cause in the site they seem cool, but they aren't. I would definitely don't come back there.

David's Flat has a real good central location, within walking distance to alot of attractions, resturants, supermarkets, and the termini. The staff members speak good, fluent English and are very helpful and friendly. David's a pretty cool guy too. The room I stayed in was pretty crammed though, two people could barely walk or move at the same time. The other dorms are pretty spacious though. Bathrooms cleaned regularly. Breakfast served at a little cafe around the corner -- a pastry and beverage (pretty good). I don't know where the pictures on the website where taken, cuz that's definitely not David's Flat! But I doubt that there is a better place to stay in Rome that offers air condition and comfy beds for eighteen euro!
