September 2006
4 I visited in September 2006. The building is being improved steadily. The location is an easy trip into the downtown with public transport (tram 18 either all the way to Independence square, or back to the Green line metro stop just down the hill). An excellent restaurant is on the fourth floor of the same building, but keeps irregular hours. Internet access is a pricey 6 Grivnas for fifteen minutes at a nice computer shop at the end of the hall on the second floor of the same building, but is not so much faster than the post office on Artema street nearby, which charges 6.8 Grivnas for an hour, and gives a prorated refund if you don't use a full hour. The U.S. embassy is a block away, and behind the hostel is an Orthodox style church with lots of nuns and devout parishioners, and a very moving service. The accommodation is welcoming, clean, feels safe. You get a bed in either a two-bed room or a three-bed room. Beds are firm, modern, and hinge to allow storage underneath. The five person in these two rooms share a single bathroom. It is ok. Toilet paper goes in the trash basket, not in the bowl, due to the poor condition of plumbing, which is typical in all of the buildings in this nation. The shower has a flexible handle, and adequate hot water.
