Upon arriving at the train station in Amsterdam I(back in September 1981)and not knowing where I was going to stay, I was approached by a young local dude. He noticed my internal frame pack and rightfully suspected that I was an American.
He gave me a card for Hotel Brian on Singel.
It was a close walk to the hotel and located on the Singel canal. The inside was very clean, but certainly not fancy.
The owner, originally from Philly, set me up in a room with 3 other Americans that shared the room for a couple of days.
The rooms were clean with a shared a bathoom (which I can't recall, but it must have been fine for I don't recall anything negative about it) down the hall.
The Brian offered breakfast and coffee each morning. The stereo was also available to anyone wanting to play music.
At the breakfast table one morning, I actually ran into a girl staying there that I'd worked with in California. Small world.
The Hotel Brian was very inexpensive, clean, net, and very cool. If you want a good location and don't mind sharing your room with some strangers (like yourself), then I can highly recommend the Hotel Brian.
I gave it an average because it was nothing fancy, but for the money, it was a great place to stay.
