I stayed at Hortus for a few days, actually moved there from another place. I was traveling with my girlfriend and we had a gorgeous room on the top floor overlooking the botanical gardens -- which are also worth a visit. The breakfasts were the best!

I loved this place! First night we arrived in Amsterdam it was pretty scary. (we had a bad experience -- missed our flight, no hotel.) But after we found our Hostel we were so happy! this place was excellent! The people were so nice and the rooms were clean. It's walking distance to everything. The breakfast was delicious and the setup was cool! I will for sure be returning to this hostel when I head back to Amsterdam. I highly recommend coming here. Oh yeah, and it's safe for women. Me and my sister went, and I'm a pretty paranoid person.

I stayed here a couple years ago for a few cold weeks. We found the place by accident really, but it was a great find. We ditched our prior reservations and took up accommodations at Hortus, based on the sales pitch from a gentleman at the train station that must have seen us coming a mile away. We were easily baited with promises of inexpensive sleeping arrangements and even more inexpensive breakfasts. We didn't have the eggs during our stay, however the Nutella jars we went though more than made up for it. Great sport and football atmosphere. A majority of the guests during my stay were American hippy tourists and some random Russian stoners, which was pretty cool. The hippies were pretty well washed and relaxed, which was super nice. Great location. Great place. Recommend to anyone that can take care of themselves when on a holiday. Will be back.

This is a nice place to stay — our favorite in Amsterdam! It is a great alternative to hostels, for not much more money (even for a twin private room). The owner is quite friendly and helpful. Additionally, there is limited free Internet access (one computer only). Even more appealing is the surrounding neighborhood. Largely residential, it is SO much quieter and cleaner than the red light district, yet it is still within walking distance to it. The zoo and botanical gardens are also within easy walking distance, and Wertheim Park is just down the street. This is a very lovely park, and it is frequented by both Dutch residents and foreign tourists (an Auschwitz memorial is found within). I spent a most relaxing morning in Wertheim Park, and here I got at least a small insight into the Dutch way of life. If you would like a peaceful place to stay while in Amsterdam, I highly recommend Hotel Hortus!

I just finished backpacking across Europe and this was one of my favorite places to stay. The location in the Plantage should not scare you away. It is a 5-minute walk from Waterlooplein, a 10-minute walk from Rembrantplein, and a 15-minute walk from Central Station and the Pijp. The rooms are big, bright, clean and have a huge window to chill out in. The staff are super friendly. The common room is big and comfortable with free Internet, satellite TV, and one-euro Heineken beers in the vending machine. The breakfast is free and is toast and eggs (which they cook and clean up for you!). If I ever return to Amsterdam I will be staying here!
