The Hostelz.com Review
It's not in the best part of town. It doesn't have a nice view. It doesn't have the best menu. However, it does have very friendly and helpful staff, change money (usual rates), have moped rental and immaculate rooms. As a bonus they are some of the cheapest in Phnom Penh too. It's an easy 10 minute walk from the central market (sometimes known as the New Market) and passes the Russian (Orussey) Market on the way - great for food. They offer the usual round of tours and onward transport options, but you'd really be better off negotiating with the numerous moto drivers (local tours and trips) or going directly to the local bus stop (next to central market) if travelling further afield.
The place is run very much like a hotel, and indeed looks very much like one apart from the rather open plan reception area. It's also easy to get to from the central market bus stop: just take a moto but pay no more than 2,000 riel, or take a rickshaw and expect to pay around 4,000 riel, possibly more. Or you could ask to be let off at the filling station just on the junction of Sihanouk Boulevard and Monivong Boulevard. From this junction walk west about 200 m. You will pass some decent restaurants on the right hand side (note for later on: order a volcano! It's great). You will see a large movie theatre on your left. This is opposide street 141 (it's not named). Walk north up street 141 for about 100 m (probably less) until you see the sign for the 'King Guest House' poking out from the right hand side.
Whereas there is Internet available on the junction of 141 street and Sihanouk Boulevard, cheaper places can be found up Monivong Boulevard just before you get to the market.
Above all, eat some food from the central market and from Orussy market, do try the motos however crazy they might look and ALWAYS haggle for the price. Typically nowhere in Phnom Penh is more than 2,000 riel away. Have fun! It's a great city!

I've stayed in the King Guesthouse many times since first ending up there in Feb. 2004. I've made some great friends amongst the staff and have enjoyed countless mad times with them, including nosedrinking sessions which have now become infamous in Phnom Penh! I can't wait to get back to Cambodia and the King, this time we're bringing the kids. — Shaun UK (2007-03-08)

Great! I have stayed there on my last three visits. Staff are excellent and participate in most activities guests get going (and yes, they like the occasional drink with you -- remember these people work for very little, so buying them a few drinks is the go). Some of the blokes will, after finishing work, go out with you and enjoy a night on the town. Again remember, they get paid very little. The owner (the King as we call him) has shown myself and the two mates that I was traveling with a great honour by inviting us to share his traditional Khmer meal on a couple of occasions to get to know him and his wife. She personally cooks all his meals. Not in the best locations, then again not in the worst -- but safe and fun. I am staying there again February and August '07. — Dave from Western Australia (2006-12-17)

This place is superb. The staff are excellent, very friendly and make great drinking friends at night.
This is the place I always stay when I visit Phnom Penh. — Peter Holland (2005-12-03)

Fantastic place, we were lucky enough to be here on Christmas day. The owner laid on a fantastic meal for all the guests and even shared his highly prized bottle of Whiskey with us. The volcano meal has to be tried at the nearby restaurant $5 dollars, with fine service by the local beer girls. will be back next time. — James Collins (2005-08-24)
