2 We just returned from a stay at the Sestri. If all you want is a cheap place to sleep that's close to the action and right on the bus lines, this is the place for you. It is a Muslim-owned establishment, in case that might be problematic for you. I can't say it's especially clean, although the sheets are very clean, if not matching. We had to ask for towels, and eventually went to get them ourselves. The little refrigerator was nice and cold, the television was color at one time, but not by the time we saw it. We were on the street side, and the street musicians up on the corner serenaded us to sleep both nights. All in all, not horrible. We will stay there again, but I'm sure I won't be letting then know I'm Jewish.

4 Great for the budget-minded traveller. We had a double room for less than $45 in San Francisco, which was a great deal. It's close to almost everything. The staff were very friendly. The location is excellent; it seems like everyone flocks to this neighborhood on the weekends. We were lucky, because we were literally steps away from all the action. I definitely would recommend it to anyone who isn't looking for frills, but just a place to sleep at night.

4 On arriving at this hotel I was a little put off by the exterior. It is surrounded by hundreds of fruit and fish stalls and is absolutely buzzing with Chinese people during the day. However, after getting checked in, the place definitely grew on me. The rooms were not the best, but for the price and the fantastic location I was pleasantly surprised. It is one block from north beach, so if restaurants, cafes and nightclubs are your thing, then this is the place for you. Likewise, the Chinatown main area is only a few minutes away. The infamous Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz are a short walk or bus ride away, and transport is very cheap if walking doesn't appeal to you. As for the main area of Market Street, it is also within walking distance, or the bus number 45, which you can get right outside this accommodation, will take you right to Union Square. The staff were very friendly, and very approachable. If you are not looking for luxury, then I would definitely recommend this hotel.

1 This "hotel" is to be avoided at all cost. When we arrived, we were directed to a room with unmade beds. The next room we were sent to had no beds at all and the third room was just plain filthy. The sheets on the beds were badly stained, as were the walls and carpet. The people at the desk were very unhelpful, we had to wait 45 minutes before anyone would deal with us (and trust me, the wait wasn't because of a queue of eager would be guests). We chose this hotel on the basis of, among other things, the reviews. I can only assume that the quality has fallen off dramatically recently. BE WARNED, as of June 2005, this place is a dive. It is not suitable to stay in, regardless of the price. $15 sounds good, it isn't - pay $5 more and stay in a clean comfortably hostel.

4 I strongly recommend this hotel. The family running this hotel is Indian (or Pakistani, I didn't ask) and very courteous (they may be new owners, and there may have been renovations recently). The rooms are clean, and come with bed, TV (cable), closet, sink, and a dresser (with a large mirror). Some bedrooms face the street, others have a dull view of other rooms (it's a U-shaped building). The bathrooms are old but generally okay. The sign outside is broken, and there is a barred door, but be not discouraged; this hotel is great. There isn't a place to do laundry, but one can be found about two or three blocks from the hotel (water is expensive in California). I really loved the location in Chinatown; in fact, the very center of Chinatown (as marked on tourist maps) is one block east of the hotel. There are a few fruit and vegetable shops downstairs, which are packed with people every morning. The municipal bus system can take you anywhere and you can get on a bus right outside the hotel (get a MUNI pass to save cash). Food (if you like Chinese) around this hotel is good, authentic and CHEAP; pizza, crepe, and burger joints are available also. As for shopping there's a Walgreens just a block away for bathroom stuff or whatever and just south of Chinatown is Union Square and the fashion district, followed by Market Street and then the upscale Soma area where you might try the Sony Meteron if you like gadgets or games. Fashion stores close around 9, restaurants 10 or 11, and clubs . . .? And the MUNI lines run to midnight or even 2 a.m. in some places.

3 This place is run by nice Italian people, and it's on a first-come, first-serve basis so if you don't get here by noon you might not have a room. There are local people that live in here. They were nice and the place was pretty quiet given all the clubs around here. It's clean and nice — no TV and it has a shared bathroom. But it's in an excellent part of San Francisco. It's $30 a night and in a good part of the city.

3 I looked at this hotel in the fall of 2004. It was EXTREMELY clean so it must have changed a lot since the previous person's comments. Keep in mind that this is a residential hotel and local people live in this hotel, which is common in SF, as the rent price for apt/flat is very high. So they might not be as accommodating to some as a "tourist" or "transient hotel." The rooms are very basic but the location is excellent. Bring good shoes — the hills can get steep walking in this part of the city.

4 Okay, it's in an awesome location. It's cheap (I paid about $33 per night). It's not the swankiest place, but I don't think I could have found a private room in a nice neighborhood for that much. I would definitely recommend it for those who don't mind sharing a bathroom and don't mind a little dust here and there.

4 I stayed here for one week during my visit to San Francisco. I loved it. For less than $35 a night I got a nice, clean, private room with a shared bath. The location is awesome and VERY safe, especially for a female traveling alone. I was very concerned; but there was no need to be, because the hotel is located in North Beach, and the place is very safe. I didn't rent a car, which was a good thing because transportation is steps away, and it's literally steps away from all the tourist attractions.

1 Absolutely filthy. The walls in the room were smeared with old dirt, as were the blinds. The place smelled very bad as well. This is located next to a produce stand selling durium fruit, which smell like rotting feet! The staff who took my friend's reservation were not going to refund him. He did get a chargeback but do not waste your time with this dump!
