This hotel is located in some sort of Riga Bermuda Triangle. It is rather far from the train station, and the best way to find it the first time is, indeed, a cab ride for which you will be overcharged. It is not that close to Old Town. It is in the middle of a semi-residential/semi-industrial/semi-new area of Riga that is absolutely abandoned after dark. I have traveled extensively in Eastern Europe/Russia and went to Hotel Skanste with two friends who have also spent significant time negotiating world travel. We became lost every time we attempted to use public transportation to get home!!! Hotel Skanste is not well situated if you want to see Riga and not pay for a taxi every evening. The staff are nice, mostly English-speaking. Breakfast is wonderful. Rooms are clean. I was totally satisfied with all aspects of the hotel except for the location.
