1 Cheap. Icky.
I stayed at the Greenpoint Y for three nights this August and ended up with about twenty bedbug bites. The problem is not new, according to their own staff, and the management was apologetic but didn't seem to be on the ball. (You might end up taking a few of those bugs home as live souvenirs, so read up before you book.) On the positive side, I only saw one roach in the bathroom. Advantages -- It is very conveniently located, safe, and cheap. The staff were polite and mostly helpful. Still, bedbugs. A place would have to be very special to make up for that.

4 Loved it!
I have stayed at Greenpoint YMCA in April 2008 for ten days. The staff were absolutely fantastic and (even when very busy) good fun. The room was very clean, equipped with a working TV, AC, and a table fan. The furniture was in very good condition. Never spotted any cockroaches or mice. The Breakfast is included as well as using of the house own Gym and Pool. The restrooms are shared -- dont expect a five-Star restroom, but they were clean at all times. Very secure and nice, mostly polish neighbourhood -- the Greenpoint NYPD Department is located just opposite site of the Y. The Hostel is located just between two Subway Stations, only five minute' walk to both. Allow twenty-five Minutes to get to Times Square or Union Square. Surely, the Greenpoint Y is not a five-Star Sheraton but is a good, secure, and comfortable place to stay. Is worth the Money and I will stay there again.

1 Mouse in my room. I find a condom inside my bed. No housekeeping at all. I pay for a deluxe room and they gave me an economy. I ask for a change and they change the room ten days after (I paid for a month. it was horrible, and they didn't refund the difference between deluxe room and economy room. I paid a deluxe room but they gave me an economy room! Isn't it incredible?). I stayed in another places cause I wouldn't come back to the hostel. Staff was rude and terrible liar. Underground is ten minutes but at night you can stay for an hour from Manhattan to Greenpoint. If you want my opinion, it's better pay a little more for a pleasant place. Please, don't go to YMCA Greenpoint!

4 I quite a good budget choice for New York. Interesting neighbourhood, easy access to airports and city via public transport (of peak times only). The building is old and plumbing a bit ancient but cleaners do their best. Remember anywhere in the U.S.A., maids through to managers are all poorly paid so you can't expect miracles and low prices at the same time. We didn't have the Manhattan view room, but will request it next trip.

4 A really good rate price/quality, considering it's cheap and a very good hostel. It's what you have to expect from a good hostel: no luxury, but a good bed and a warm shower. And a plus: a good breakfast at the local restaurant, and access to all the sport equipment (sauna, swimming pool, gym). It took me generally 30-40 minutes to get to the hostel from the place I was visiting in Manhattan, due to subway problems. It's a good address.

5 I live in Brooklyn and always recommend people stay at the Greenpont Y. It's in the best Polish community in the city. The subway and bus are only a short distance and get you either to the boroughs or the city. There are no gangs in this neighborhood; the Y sits 20 feet from a police precinct. Though there is a Polish nightclub with the best drinks in the area. Greenpoint is not to be missed on your trip to NYC.

2 Yes it is basic but very quiet and cheap for a private room, and only 20 minutes to Times Square. Although next time I'll be staying in Manhattan somewhere. :)

4 I visited New York City from Montreal, Canada in April 2004 and stayed at Greenpoint YMCA for a week. I found the YMCA by shopping on the Net for the lowest price and made reservations via e-mail. First, the staff person who answered my e-mails and took my booking was very nice and helpful. Thanks Carole! The YMCA is in a great location, a short distance from New York via two subway stations (Nassau and Greenpoint) and within short walking distance of many good, low price restaurants and many services (pharmacies), all on Manathan Avenue, and it's across from a police station. The YMCA has old Brooklyn character and charm, as in a movie. The staff (24-hour) are very nice and helpful. The rooms are in a secure portion of the YMCA. The staff buzz you in. My room was very clean and calm, with color TV, ample closet space, air conditioning, housekeeping, and clean sheets and towels every day. The bathroom and showers were clean (you must also do your best to keep it clean) and there was plenty of hot water. It has a great sports facility, great weight room and swimming pool, perfect for a great night's sleep. The place is quiet and I met people from all over the world. All this for only $231 US. The coffee shop across the street (at Messerole and Manathan) is perfect for a good breakfast. I recommend this YMCA if you don't care to spend a lot on your room and would rather spend the money to enjoy New York City. I am planning to go back in May and I will be very glad to stay at the Greenpoint YMCA.

3 I thought it was fine — a bit grubby but clean. The staff were helpful. There was a good, free breakfast. I found the location a hassle, though. I didn't find it a quick subway ride to anywhere I wanted to go. There were lots of changes with lots of steps. Also, it was nearly impossible to get a taxi to the hostel from Manhattan. And if you do manage to hop in a taxi, they will not know where this hostel is. This place is across the street from a police precinct — it felt very safe, and it was quiet.

3 This is a reasonable place. It's 20 minutes from Manhattan by subway. It's safe — the police station is on the other side of the road. It has two subway stations close by, Greenpoint and Nassau. This should be a good place for anybody looking for a budget accommodation. There is breakfast at the nearby Manhattan Restaurant.

3 I was there few months ago. It was a very good value for the money. I didn't spend too much money on accommodations, so I could spend more on shopping in Manhattan. The only thing that bothered me was the stairs. There was no lift, and I had to climb to level 4 with all my heavy suitcases; nobody helped me. The view from my room was great. I could see the Empire State Building and I took pictures from my room.

2 Very basic, but clean and decent. Yes, there were homeless people here, but at least that showed the owners have a conscience!

1 A real dump. They promise air-conditioning, but charge extra for it. Gang noise from the next building kept me up all night. They house homeless people in this place.

3 When I first climbed the stairs to the rooms, I wasn't sure I could stay there — the linoleum in the halls was peeling, the doors were battered, the room badly needed painting. But I decided to tough it out. I didn't see any bugs; had a firm mattress, clean sheets and towel, and warm shower; used the sauna; and even got a free breakfast every morning. The staff was friendly, and the location was a quick subway ride to Manhattan. I'd recommend it to anyone who's on a budget and doesn't mind putting up with cosmetic challenges.
