Eco Machu Picchu Pueblo is more bed-and-breakfast than hostel. There is no atmosphere in common areas, but the rooms and bathrooms are very nicely decorated and it is a pleasant place to spend a night or two during your Machu Picchu trip.
The Location
Eco Machu Picchu Pueblo is located on a side street in the Las Orquideas area. When arriving by train or foot, you will need to cross one of the bridges over the Aguascalientes River to reach the hostel. Although all of Aguas Calientes is very touristy, there are slightly more locals in this area and some cheaper restaurants. A large handicrafts market is nearby. Aguas Calientes is small, so everything is walking distance from here, although accommodations on the other side of the bridge may be slightly more convenient since they are closer to the path and bus stop to Machu Picchu.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are private and dorm rooms available. We booked the cheapest option available and were placed in a room with just three beds! Rooms are clean and nicely decorated, with bedside lights and charging sockets. There was also a working television in the room, with a range of channels (all in Spanish).
En suite bathrooms are modern and come well-stocked with toilet paper, soap, and even shampoo sachets! Showers sometimes produce hot water, but the hot water supply is not reliable.
Common Spaces
A downstairs common area contains a few sofas and facilities for making tea. Upstairs is a communal eating area where a simple breakfast is served. Unfortunately, breakfast is served from 5 a.m., which is too late for those people wanting to arrive at Machu Picchu for 6 a.m. (whether traveling by bus or walking, you will need to leave between 4 and 4:30 a.m. to be in for sunrise).
There is Wi-Fi in common areas and in the dorm room. The Wi-Fi often does not work for iPhones. There is no real atmosphere in common areas; people tend to keep to themselves.
Summary
Don’t expect any atmosphere, but Eco Machu Picchu Pueblo is a convenient place from which to base yourself for your Machu Picchu trip. The rooms and bathrooms are nicely decorated and well-kept. There are pleasant extras such as soap, shampoo, and tea-making facilities. Downsides are the unreliable Wi-Fi, shower temperature, and awkward breakfast timings.
