HOSTEL AND GULLADUFF HOUSE HISTORY

Our nearby main house called “Gulladuff House” of the local Gulladuff Townland, is the oldest continually inhabited house in the area and predates the town of Moville that was built largely
since 1835. This House, built on the site of two earlier cottages, is from the 1700s. Two rivers meet close to the hostel and in front of the house. The main rive then does a spectacular U- turn in the woods. There are 4 bridges altogether and one can walk to the town over two of them. Two are archaeological sites and one is reputed to be the oldest in Ireland and dated from the 6th century as built by St. Patrick. It s associated with nearby 0.5km distant early Christian monastic settlement of Cooley Cross where there is a Celtic cross (pre-Christian) and monastic ruins including a corbelled “skull hose” or oratory.

The Corn Mill, with which we share our entrance, was originally part of the overall property.

The hostel and house are in woodland settings with two rivers on either side and a large pond on the other. There is much wildlife including a rookery, bats, varied birds, and frogs, badgers and foxes. There are several unusual and interesting mature specimen trees, as
well as wildflowers. Two glens converge along the two rivers and join in front of the House where there is a sweeping lawn for camping. The main Bredagh River has brown trout and occasional sea/white trout and guests are welcome to fish or paddle.

MOVILLE

Moville is on Lough Foyle with many beaches, two piers and shoreside walk. Local amenities include a large recreational “Green”, putting and crazy golf, tennis, bicycle hire. The town has restaurants, music in pubs at weekends. Banks and ATMs, post office and health care centre and three churches. There are regular festivals/events throughout the year.

The town is well siting as a stop over to visit the Inishowen Peninsula. We will be happy to plan your itinerary and point out places to visit and things to do. Particularly, we will explain and locate those places of cultural, archaeological and historic interest that make up the real landscape tapestry of this “Ireland in miniature” peninsula.

The hostel hosts outdoor music events in the grounds during the summer. These include the annual Bob Dylan and Beatles festivals.

We also host other events such as outdoor working with craft and wood workshops provided by Transition Inishowen.
