Ko Pha Ngan Hostels

Ko Pha Ngan is a beautiful tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, in between Koh Samui and Ko Tao (in both location and size). About 30 minutes by boat from Koh Samui, it is less developed than its big sister but has grown to be a popular backpacking destination over the past few years with several Ko Pha Ngan hostels now open for business.

Best known for its monthly full-moon parties when thousands of people flock to the south-west tip of the island to dance on the beach until the sun rises, Koh Pha Ngan has created a reputation as the "party" island of Thailand, with numerous other Half Moon, Black Moon, Shiva Moon parties, and any other possible excuse for a party you can think of. There's a major party at least twice a week, and Haad Rin, the main tourist center, is pumping every night no matter what.

Haad Rin is the main destination for those in search of some hedonism, and there are plenty of accommodation options for those on a budget. Note that prices here are more expensive than in some areas of Thailand, and you'll find spending a little more can mean a huge leap in quality. The cheapest rooms are often of an appalling standard, which goes unchecked due to the number of people looking for rooms over Full Moon. The other, quieter areas of the island offer better budget accommodation away from the madness, and taxi journeys are fixed price at all times so you can work out which option is more economical for you if you're heading to the party.

Finding an available hostel in Koh Pha Ngan during most of the month is relatively easy. However, on the days leading up to and following the full moon, every room on the island will be booked up (the nicer ones months in advance), so be prepared. Prices are hiked up (sometimes doubled), minimum stays apply at most hotels and hostels, and sometimes you're even obliged to pay for dinner on the night of the party. But it's worth it.
