Tanga is a large town located in the northeast of Tanzania, about a six-hour drive from Dar es Salaam. It is possible to drive or catch a satellite (bus) to the town from Dar es Salaam.
There is a really interesting museum in Tanga, called the URITHI Tanga Museum, which is a historical building that includes a watch tower. Tanga is not a large tourist destination, but it will give you the opportunity to see Tanzanian culture and experience an off-the-tourist-trail experience. There are some gorgeous sunsets to be seen from the town.
As with all countries, it is recommended to check the government travel warnings and advice before and during your travels. Most governments will have an option to register your travel, so in the unfortunate event of a bad situation occurring, the government will know of your plans. Tanga is mostly safe, however, you should take care, and use some common sense, such as not walking around flashing your valuable and loads of cash, also don't carry all your valuables in one place.
There are a few accommodation options in Tanga; some places are a bit hit and miss, so do your research before booking a place. There are several cheap hotels, inns, and guesthouses, some which operate like a hostel in Tanga, and provide dorm room accommodation. Breakfast is usually included in the price. Some people might not be used to the calls for early morning prayer, which will sound through the town -- if you are a light sleeper, then you may choose to wear earplugs.
