"I stayed here in October 2006 and it really was top notch. Spotless and modern, I'd recommend this hostel to anyone. Elmar is a top guy -- tipped me off to a bar with a 15 rand cocktail promo (Bean Bag Bohemia) and where to watch the Scotland v. Ukraine game. I ended up that night in a bar with Elmar (who was drinking tea) and doing karaoke with his friends. "Best Place I Stayed In - Keith and Pat could not have done more to make our stay better. We actually had a free apartment to stay in on the Bluff but after one night we moved back in to Smiths Cottage. Pat was always ready to offer advice if we wanted to do something and often drove us where we wanted to go. Keith is a legend. He often got dragged into the pub by us (sorry Pat). "I moved here after one night in another hostel and ended up staying a week. They paid for our taxi from the other one too. It is so chilled out and all the staff are really friendly and helpful. The beds are really comfy, the whole place is spotlessly clean (which is good as Durban does have a problem with cockroaches) and it is in a really nice neighbourhood. "I think I was there about two years ago and ever since I have been dreaming about going back. Rob really knows how to make his guests feel at home. I have been working in the hospitality industry for year with many advantages that guests pay top dollar for, but I could never really get the feel for fun and relaxation. "When I stayed there it was probably the cheapest hostel in the area, but it was very crummy and dirty and disorganised. The rooms were tiny and only a few of the rooms had balcony views. The most annoying thing was there was a neverending supply of people who wanted to borrow money. "We had booked using another website and already paid our deposit. We were amused to hear that the hostel was no longer affiliated with the YHA associated (and for the obvious reasons this was no suprise), and that our booking was nowhere in sight--neither was the deposit we had already paid. I asked to look at a double room, and to my horror it was a double bed, surrounded by 4 bunks; again, it stank of wee. The loitering people in the reception area made it a bit suspicious.
