"This is my favourite hostel on the face of the planet! I spent 3 months in S.A. and went back to the Hippo Hide twice after my original visit when I found myself in Durban. The staff are friendly, it's as clean as any private house, and it feels like you're someone's guest rather than a scraggy...
(Umgeni Heights)

"We had booked the hostel on the internet and when we arrived, the receptionist didn't know we were coming, so made us wait in the lounge for and hour while he found someone that spoke English. The prices on the wall were half what we were to be charged and when we eventually shown to the rooms...

"When I stayed there it was probably the cheapest hostel in the area, but it was very crummy and dirty and disorganised. The rooms were tiny and only a few of the rooms had balcony views. I visited Durban and Commercial Road is dangerous. I got robbed there. I will never ever visit Durban again. The police are useless.

It all happens in Morningside, Florida Road Area. The city needs to be treated like any other big city -- be streetwise. Do not walk around the Point Road Ushaka Marine Area. The beachfront is safe to walk around, but do not leave valuables unattended on the beach. After hours, the city runs dry and the night owls head for Florida Road -- restaurants, coffee shops, clubs, and bars. A must is the Botanical Gardens (it's free).

When we went to Sea World we were followed most of the way there. It was very scary and we had to run most of the way. Not fun, but then again Sea World was great!
Comment by Big Ben
Be careful in the SeaWorld area. Take a taxi or bus directly to and from there as the area around it is very dangerous.
