Tongue is located in the far northwest of the Scottish Highlands, on the shores of the Kyle of Tongue and behind the mountains of Ben Hope and Ben Loyal. Although it is a small settlement of not more than a thousand inhabitants, your Tongue hostel will locate you in an impressive stone building near the kyle. It can be a great choice if you are longing for a few tranquil days away from it all or you want to do some serious hiking nearby.
If you decide to opt for the latter, you will be spoilt with fantastic choices. For an easy and pleasant stroll, you can choose to walk up to Caisteal Bharraich, a prominent ruined tower house, which is located in a strategic position on the hill overlooking the settlement of Tongue, and as such, offers superb views of the town as well as the nearby area. For a more advanced adventure, you might want to attempt to conquer Ben Loyal, the Queen of Scottish Mountains. Although the paths can get quite boggy, the three-hundred-sixty-degree panorama of the sea, kyle, and nearby mountains will make up for the difficulties. Alternatively, you could take a daytrip to the nearby Durness, where you can visit the Cave of Smoo, an impressive two-hundred-foot long, one-hundred-thirty-foot wide limestone cave.
If you are just here for a rest, a walk on one of the many nearby beaches might be exactly what you need! Skinnet Beach is a great stretch of sandy beach that will awe you with a panorama of Ben Loyal, while Talmine Beach can be ideal for a romantic getaway, given its remote and secluded location. If you are planning to travel around in the area, having your own vehicle is an absolute must, as buses do not stop at most of the above-mentioned attractions.
