Oban Hostels

Oban is a lively, seaside town with sea air and great views towards the island of Mull. You can get to your hostel easily by train or bus as well as ferry connections to Mull and beyond. Its official resident population is around eight thousand, but in the peak season this can swell to twenty-five thousand, so booking ahead at the hostel is a wise move if you plan a visit in the summer months.

Tourist facilities in the town are excellent, with many bars (many playing live music at weekends), restaurants, internet cafes, gift shops, supermarkets, and a tourist information at Argyle Square in the centre of town.

Oban markets itself as the seafood capital of Scotland, and visitors find it hard to argue with that statement once they have been down to the harbour and sampled the delicious treats on offer from the seafood stall there. There are delicious prawns, winkles, cockles, and lemon sole at great prices and as fresh as you are likely to find anywhere. Among Oban's many attractions are Oban Distillery -- discover how Scotland's national drink is made and then sample some of the good stuff; McCaigs Tower -- which sits on the hill above the town and offers great views to the sea; Oban Museum; and also boat trips (you can visit the cathedral of St. Columba), kayaking, or even the beach which is only ten minutes away at Ganavan.
