    "This hostel is a combination of a two-story lodge building (which also has one dorm room) and the older, wooden backpackers building. The hostel is one of the older hostels in Wanaka, and is showing its age and is looking frayed.
The Location
The hostel is located at the top of Helwick Street, which is the main street leading up from the lake in Wanaka. It is opposite an email and cycle rental shop, and also opposite a pub. There are some parking places for the hostel -- however, there...  "This place is kind of small and a bit cramped. It's not the best of the YHAs but it's a decent base." … "Stayed in a twin room which was tiny, bit stuffy and the room heater switches itself off every thirty minutes so you freeze in your sleep. Kitchen/lounge/staff are fine and its a bit quieter and set back from the main part of town. Overall its ok but not great." … "Stayed in cottage, double room has bunks, they could have left this as a double as they charge enough for it."... "A beautiful place to stay in the middle of one of the most spectacular places on earth. The large windows in the front of the Purple Cow capture the spectacular view into a warm and friendly place to relax in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. It is hard to find fault with the Purple Cow. Even the location is optimal. It is easy to find the Purple Cow on the corner of the main downtown section of Wanaka. A large grocery store is less than two blocks away. Although many restaurants are... "This hostel has a fantastic location, with amazing views of the lake. Unfortunately, during our particular stay they had managed to double book our room (which was a double) even though we had booked in October and sent a confirmation email the day before. Not a good first impression.
The hostel has a strange layout, in that you have to walk through the kitchen and laundry to get to some of the bedrooms, but the facilities are all good. The kitchen is large and well-stocked. And the...122 Brownston St
