"Bakers Lodge is around a fifteen-minute steady walk from the bus stop, information centre, and the centre of town. Reception is straight in front of you as you enter. If it's unmanned, there is a number to call for attention. When manned, the staff are helpful -- they let you know what's on and what's worth going to see. They saved us some time just by letting us know the bus called there everyday before going onto the official bus stop. Rooms are quite spacious and clean. Many have...
"The Laughing Kiwi Backpackers is a really nice and relaxed hostel. I stayed there for one week and had a good time. Mark and Wendy (the owners) are very friendly. The hostel has two little houses, each with dorm/doppel-rooms, bathroom and well equipped kitchen (one house mainly is for the travellers who stay just for a few nights, the other one for the people who work in motueka) The hostel is very clean. It doesn't has a tv but a stereo so you can listen to cds and radio. the "back...
"Relaxing and very nice atmosphere - Very friendly and warm staff, we were only there for one short night, though, they made us feel very welcome and gave us excellent service! Room was good, showers too! So spacious as well, with the nice large, relaxing garden, big parking space as well. We felt sorry that we had to leave after that one night! Janne is a truly great host! We will definitely stay back there if we get in the area again." … Welcome to our Budget Backpacker Hostel...
"The best hostel we stayed in on a six-week trip to New Zealand - The hostel is just off the main street in this small town. We were warmly welcomed and invited to inspect the hostel before we booked in. Our room was spacious and clean. The kitchen was very clean and well equipped, the lounge and dining areas clean and comfortable. There is a small laundry and furnished deck areas." … We're surrounded by cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and banks. Relax and unwind on our spacious decks...
"Motueka Backpackers is located right on High Street (the main street in Motueka town) next to the barber shop and about a block from the information center. It is mostly for camping. The owner, Lyndsay -- quite possibly the friendliest most accommodating hostel manager on earth -- will provide a tent with free mattress and bedding upon request. There are also caravans and a limited number of beds. The prices here are by far the cheapest in town and although it's not the best looking or...

Motueka Travel Tips & Suggestions

Motueka is a great place. Looks on the map like a small place to pass through on the way to Abel Tasman, but there's a lot to do there and for staying for a while there can't be many better towns in New Zealand. Small but with the facilities and nightlife of a much larger town, extremely friendly and welcoming locals, arguably the best climate in New Zealand, tons to do within easy driving distance. I'd stop here for at least a week and make it your base for exploring Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks. Though this is really the sort of place you'd want to live permanently someday, you don't get the full appeal of it in a few days. Other than the obvious attraction of Abel Tasman, Golden Bay is well worth a trip over the pass to visit Farewell Spit and the Pupu springs (very good on a day with nice weather, far better than you might imagine) among other attractions. What I would most recommend though is the trip up Mount Arthur to the flora carpark (steep, unsurfaced road but easily achievable in a two-wheel-drive car or campervan) and then up the trail to the Mount Arthur Hut and beyond. Nice walk through the native forest up to the hut, takes one to two hours depending on how slowly you take it, but don't be tempted to turn back there as I was the first time I went up. The hut is at the treeline, carry on for another ten minutes to come out on the tops and be rewarded with some of the best views you will ever see in your life, I say that without hype. Seriously incredible, going up there was like drugs, I went back half a dozen times and would have carried on doing so if I hadn't left to fly back to the U.K. Easy walk on a good surface too, even in the winter. The wild Kea parrots up there that will fly down and walk around a few feet from you if you are lucky are the icing on the cake. You can carry on further up all the way to the summit of Mount Arthur if you have the time. Don't miss this out - it was the highlight of my whole six months in New Zealand, and it's one of the first things I plan on doing when I go back.
