Kaikoura Hostels

This is a complete list of all known hostels in Kaikoura. If you know of a Kaikoura hostel that isn't listed here, please use the "Add a New Hostel" link at the bottom of the page.
"Continuing along the main seaside road, about ten minutes past town is the Lazy Shag Backpackers. In few words, this hostel is a run-of-the-mill, no stand-outs, no frills, just the to-be-expected basics. There is a kitchen, computer corner, and a TV area downstairs. The hostel looks like a modern lodge, without any rustic charm, save the fireplace. But, even it is awkwardly set off in a...
"The Adelphi Lodge is situated in the centre of Kaikoura (West End). Kaikoura is the centre of New Zealand's marine life, where you can do whale watching or go swimming with dolphins and seals. Highway 1 leads through Kaikoura and the town can be easily reached by bus or car. Coaches stop just two hundred meters from the backpackers. The hostel provides plenty of off-street parking right behind...
"Dusky Lodge is centrally located in Kaikoura, though from the outside has a bit of a Motel 6 look about, and just a stone's throw away from the water, as well as an easy walk to the main street. It has a pool, hot tub and sauna available to guests, and while Dusky advertises that the pool is heated, it seemed mighty cold during a recent visit. There is a beautiful wood deck out back that...
"From the outside, the clean and well-maintained YHA Kaikoura - Maui Hostel looks like a quaint and neat little house in off-white with about nine parking lots at the front, and set against a side of a cliff. The interior has an old style charm and the walls of the rooms are fixed in wooden panels. The dining room, living room, and TV lounge are fitted with large panel windows, perfect for...
"This hostel is fantastic. It has the friendliest owner of any hostel I've been to, someone who was always on hand to give the best advice and offer his knowledge. This place has a good atmosphere and a very cozy lounge based around the fire, making it feel very homely." … "Homely, clean, friendly with really helpful staff and a great wood fire. There is plenty of free car parking and it's...
"Cray Cottage, owned and operated by Jakki and Don, is a charming little place to stay in the beachside town of Kaikoura. They are located about a 15 minute walk out from the main center of town, but offer free rides to and from the bus stop as well as loaner bicycles while you're staying with them. The hostel is located in a separate building behind their house. The dormitory,...
"The Dolphin Lodge is an excellent hostel. It is located in the residential district that sits about 50 meters above the main street of town. This provides great views out into the ocean, especially if youre up early enough for sunrise. It's just a fairly small home, so it's not one of the big hostels you will find in larger cities. It has a very cozy feel to it. The rooms and facilities...
"Sunrise Lodge is a wonderful little hostel located just a short walk from Kaikoura town centre. The owners are fantastic and really go to the extreme to make you feel welcome. A free pick-up is provided from the bus-stop in town and they take the time to show you to your bed and introduce the other people staying at the hostel. Likewise, at the end of your stay, there is no pressure to leave...
"Up a narrow steep pathway five minutes above the main street of Kaikoura lies Top Spot. It has the same owners as The Lazy Shag, a few meters north along the coast, but unlike its modern counterpart, this hostel has fifty more years under its roof, which gives it a more relaxed old-fashioned feel. Rose-laced arches cover the trail to the front of one of the two white houses, which boasts...

Kaikoura Travel Tips & Suggestions

Comment by Craig
Kaikoura is absolutely gorgeous! It's laid-back atmosphere is right up my alley and it's the world's best place to swim with the dolphins. The pods are normally 100-800 dusky dolphins. I love this place!
Comment by Sarah
Kaikoura is a beautiful place, the mountains, the sea, the dolphins, the whales - wicked!
Comment by Clare
Go swim with the dolphins! I did it in mid winter and froze my butt off but it was worth every second. Don't miss out on this beautiful town.
