"The ONLY place to stay in Dunedin-unless wheelchair bound! - I and my family stayed here one night during our seven-week odyssey Down Under late Spring and Summer 2006. We arrived late and walked up a steep hill to locate the hostel. It was wonderful to stay in such a snug, layered building, and the reception was most welcoming. "Really great place to stay - Really loved staying here. Its a nice, relaxed, spacious big old refurbished building with loads of character. At 20 a night its the best value to be found in Dunedin. Close and accessible to town centre (5minute walk) and with excellent facilities. Good showers, roomy and cosy lounge and kitchen. "This hostel is the best i've stayed in NZ. It's absolutely clean, the kitchen is big, clean -- perfect. It's not noisy and the double room is really nice. The shared bathroom is clean and big. The hostel is also really safe and well located. They have only one problem. If you are driving, they don't have park, and if you want to park in the public park beside the hostel, you must pay for that. "Our stay in December 2004 was so lovely that we went back to Dunedin to stay here again. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the staff were simply lovely. "Fantastic!!!" … "We stayed in a double room, the room was very spacious and had a high ceiling, it was also very clean. The owners of the place are very friendly and the fact that they do your laundry and fold it for you for only $5 is just awesome, saves a lot of time! We were also provided with free towels in our room, nice to keep one's towels clean. "Queen's Gardens Backpackers (formerly Penguin Palace) is a convenient place to stay in the centre of Dunedin, as it is just five minutes' walk from the Octagon (no steep hills to climb) and is handy to Intercity and local buses.
