Paraparaumu is a small beach town located on the Kapati Coast that makes a great stop on your way to or from Wellington. Since it is only fifty kilometers from Wellington, Paraparaumu is an easy train, bus, or car ride away and offers a nice chance to spend the day on the beach.
The town is small and quaint with only a few restaurants, pubs, and shops, but you will find everything you need -- along with some friendly locals. Since it is a small beach town, there are a few nice cafes for coffee and ice cream as well as fish-and-chip shops and nicer restaurants. There is a nice variety of eateries for many different tastes and budgets.
There are not many choices for hostels in Paraparaumu, but at those you do find, you will be greeted by welcoming hosts, beach views, and a tranquil setting. Your Paraparaumu hostel may be located in a refurbished hotel from the twenties with a charming ambiance and beautiful beachfront setting.
There are many outdoor activities to enjoy in the area. You can take a boat ride to Kapiti Island Nature Reserve, home to many species of rare and endangered birds that cannot be found on the mainland. Since only a small number of visitors are allowed each day, you must register before you go to the island. You could also spend the day just enjoying the beach and relaxing in the sun and sand. The views out to Kapiti Island are beautiful and the long stretch of beach is a great place to take a walk. There is also a twenty-five-kilometer bike path that stretches through the area near the coast, perfect for anyone who loves biking or wants to enjoy the natural scenery.
Paraparaumu is a nice destination for an afternoon at the beach or a few days relaxing by the ocean and enjoying the outdoors, tranquil scenery, and small-town beach life in New Zealand.
