This is a complete list of all known hostels in Taupo. If you know of a Taupo hostel that isn't listed here, please use the "Add a New Hostel" link at the bottom of the page.
"Action Down Under is very good value for the money. The place feels more like a motel than a backpackers. It's a modern, clean place close to the centre of town. They have made very good use of the space they have. The rooms open out onto the communal areas, on the second level there is a large, well-equipped kitchen and dining room which leads out onto a large decked balcony with...
"Go Global is a fine place to stay if you’re simply looking to party away the night in the center of Taupo, but if you’re hoping to get a good night’s rest, it’s not the place for you. The hostel is located as close to the Taupo nightlife as you can get. It’s directly above an Irish pub and is right in the middle of downtown, an easy walk to most of Taupo’s...
"Taupo Urban Retreat is a nice hostel in Taupo. Upbeat, popular, and friendly, you'll probably enjoy it too. Taupo Urban Retreat is located between the main grocery store and the lake, only a few short blocks from both. There are lots of shops nearby as well. The large dorms were some of the nicer we stayed at, with huge spacious rooms, lots of windows, and high ceilings with sloping walls....
"Taupo Central Backpackers is located right in the middle of the city and is just a stone's throw away from the huge Lake Taupo. There are numerous shops, bars, restaurants, and other amenities close by. The hostel itself is rather tatty and could seriously do with some redecorating. There are areas of corridor with no carpet - just bare concrete and the dorms are quite shabby too. All of...
"Berkenhoff Lodge is a quiet retreat away from the busy centre of Taupo, yet it is a pleasant twenty minutes' walk or five minutes' drive to the shopping centre, and a fifteen-minute walk to the lake foreshore. The hostel has a well-equipped kitchen, an upstairs lounge with a view of the back lawn, and a bar downstairs that is open each evening from 6 p.m. offering BBQ meals for those who...
"My boyfriend and I have been travelling around NZ and Australia for three months and still agree that the Silver Fern Lodge was the best accommodation for backpackers we've seen!" … "More of a motel than a backpackers. Very clean, not the place to stay if you're looking to meet people but is excellent budget accommodation." … "Very nice and clean. We stayed in a private en-suite room...
"Clean, friendly, awesome bar - when I arrived at Base Taupo, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service of the girl at reception, the hostel itself was very clean. My room was bigger than I expected and was even equipped with its own balcony! I had an amazing night at element bar and I couldn't even hear any music when I went to bed, which is a surprise. I will recommend this hostel...
"Burke's Backpackers is a quiet and laid back hostel comprised of two long buildings, one of which has two floors. Each of the rooms opens out into a common courtyard, which is a great grassy area for sunning or reading. There's a patio at one end of the building with a pay/card phone, a picnic table, and a small spa pool. The rooms are of reasonable size, but drab looking due to lack of...
"Rainbow Lodge -- what a wonderful place to visit in Taupo, the vacation capital of New Zealand’s North Island. Just on the edge of downtown Taupo, you can find Rainbow Lodge. This large backpackers is active, lively, and fun. The buildings are modern, the furnishings are in good shape, and the place is clean. The staff give their all to make you comfortable, to keep the place clean, and...

Taupo has to be one of my favourite places in New Zealand. The skydiving is a must and the Tongariro crossing was amazing. Anybody of reasonable fitness could do this trek without too many problems but just watch your footing! As for night life... I can vauguely remember a night at the Holy Cow... madness!

Being a New Zealander, I've been to Taupo on road trips plenty of times. It's probably my favourite place in NZ (North Island anyway). There's tons to do in winter and summer, and it's absolutely beautiful. Nightlife's good too, being a tourist town. And I would recommend Taupo Tandem Skydiving, it's the best thing I've EVER done (and cheap too, only $200NZ for a 12,000ft jump). Also do the Taupo Bungy while your there, check out DeBretts Thermal Resort (big natural hot water pools) as well for a unique NZ experience, especially at night. A must stop over for anyone travelling New Zealand.

Taupos a very cool place - I would definitely recommend at least 3 days there. It has lots of free walks and stuff to do.
