82%  "Hostalito Guanajuato is wonderfully located, right in the center, walking distance from everything, and the half-hour cab ride from the airport to the hostel entails a quick tour of colorful, bustling Guanajuato -- a magnificent old colonial silver city full of pedestrian walkways, art, university students, language schools, and more color than anybody's eyes can hold. We think that although...

79% "Located in the heart of the city in one of the key streets and located between the Museo del Pueblo and Diego Rivera Museum gives visitors a broad overview to enjoy the art exhibitions that you will find here, also an attraction for our guests no doubt will be the University of Guanajuato that is 150 meters away from our building. Being in the heart of the city we have a quicker access to the...
77% "Our facilities include a living room, a fully equipped community kitchen, television, internet access, lockers, separate bathrooms for men and women, among other benefits you will receive during your stay at the Companero Hostal. Our location is privileged with a variety of tourist attractions to visit nearby: 'Templo de la santa casa y San Francisco' (St. Francisco Temple), Quijote's...
79% "Hostel Guananjuato is a small property where we have 4 private rooms, a male dorm and a female dorm, common areas as our TV room, kitchen, terrace and internet. Our house dates from 1875 and maintained its structure until 1927 when it was transformed in its interior and retains its original facade. In the year 1992 it opened its doors to the public as guest house and serving until 2009 that...

71% "Located in what is without a doubt the nicest part of historic downtown Guanajuato, Hostal del Truco is a most comfortable and convenient place to stay and enjoy the marvelous atmosphere of this beautiful colonial city. Hostal del Truco is a remodeled historic mansion with 12 rooms, some looking out onto the street known as Calle del Truco, from which the hostel takes its name. We offer...
65%  "Functional but avoidable - The hostel I stayed this week was called "Refugio de Angeles," and it was on Cantarranas -- I'm positive because I took a photo of their sign as I walked out the door. However, the photos on this site do not look like the grimy, dim-lit, place I stayed in, nor do the listed amenities add up. Now, this hostel is actually just the second floor of a huge...

64%  "Nice dorm rooms, festive rooftop terrace, and excellent location in Guanajuato. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were not cleaned the six days I was there, which prompted me to find another hostel for my last days." … "Eh. - Staff was very friendly and the pink rooftop terrace was quite nice. The location was very convenient -- one-minute walk from the main "Jardin," though the road noise got...
"B&B. The 'Refugio Cafetín' Hostel, located in the heart of the cultural and historical city of Guanjuato (just half a block from the central plaza) is a calm place, perfect for rest and relaxation. We offer a clean (cleaned every day), secure environment, with free wireless internet, 24 hour hot water, access to our fully equipped kitchen, laundry service. Private room include:Full...
"Casa de los Cuentos is a different traveling concept. We are divided in two houses, one offering 13 private rooms with private bathrooms; the other one offering three private rooms and two dormitories. We like to think of Casa de los Cuentos as a petite hotel for budget travelers. Both properties are remodeled colonial buildings in the very heart of Guanajuato, just a few steps away from...

83%  "Great - Just the best hostel in the city -- clean, safe, and the most important, the fun is all around." … "We are a classical backpacker's place. We are situated at a 2 minutes walk from the 'Teatro Juarez' and straight in the historic center of Guanajuato, in a big colonial house. We offer private rooms and dormitory, laundry and internet. You should check our homepage as well:...
77%  "It's very clean and central and you feel very safe. If you are interested, the foreigner can tell you a lot about the Mexican political situation. Tip -- close always your door if you go to the bathroom or somewhere so that the little dogs can't come in your room!" … "Great location, friendly staff, nice place! We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our stay. They can accommodate large...

Guanajuato Travel Tips & Suggestions

It's easy to get addicted to a place where truly beautiful colonial architecture contrasts with the exhuberance of the of the everpresent University students and the charro musicians who entertain at all times in the beautiful plazas. Founded upon a mining area, Guanajuato sits on a web of tunnels, which nowadays provide unique traffic arteries. Both the young and not-so young will have a delightful time! Do not miss the world-famous Festival Cervantino, held every year in October.

I spent a summer in Guanajuato two years ago. It's a charming town, take the tram up to see Pipila and enjoy the multi-colored houses from high up. See the creepy mummies and markets, and just relax. While it's not as lively as Mexico City, Guanajuato is still a good place to spend a few days.
