Listowel is a small village located just above Tralee. If you’re traveling to Limerick or Kilrush from Tralee (or vice versa), Listowel is a convenient stop. The tourist office is the best place to start, after finding accommodation at a Listowel hostel (which shouldn’t be too difficult since it doesn’t get terribly busy here). There is metered parking usually everywhere, if you’re driving, but you’ll have some luck finding free parking near the castle. The bus station has several departures to and from Tralee and Limerick daily, and those cities will connect you to larger transportation hubs, so it’s not too difficult to get here.
There is a post office and a bank in town, and you won’t be too hard pressed to find internet or Wi-Fi in some areas. There are a few pubs, and they serve decent meals, so stop by for a bite and a chat with a local resident. While in town, check out Saint Mary’s Church and the Garden of Europe (which is a public monument to the Holocaust). Pay a visit to Listowel castle as well, the remains are restored and the place looks great (for being castle ruins).
Head to the coast on a sunny day, or go north for a ferry ride across the River Shannon to Kilrush, a quiet town. The Cliffs of Moher are a bit farther north, so it’s a bit ambitious to reach as a day trip, especially if you’re traveling by foot and public transportation. If you have a car, however, it’s totally doable and definitely worth it -- no matter how overrun the cliffs get with tourists, they’re still a spectacular sight.
