Kerala is a large state in southern India. Its name ("kera la"), derived from the local language, means "land of coconut," and with the amount of coconut trees everywhere it is not hard to see why. This stunning region offers beaches with red cliff faces to backwater river havens where you can watch the locals grow and harvest rice and work along the river banks to the city feel of larger cities like Kochi. It is a good suggestion to get about all of these activities as you will not only learn a lot about locals, their lives and the culture but you will have an incredible time doing so. Taking a boat and cruising down the Kerala backwaters offers amazing scenery and is something that shouldn't be missed.
But while you are there and caught up in the beauty of the place make sure you also take in some of the history of the region. It has quite a different storyline to many of the places in northern India. If you can get in to see a traditional dance show, this is also an incredible experience not to be missed.
You will find quite a number of yoga places and ayurvedic medicine and massage shops along the way through Kerala as well so make sure you stop off in these and treat yourself to a cheap massage and some authentic yoga practice.
Given that Kerala is such a large area, do your research on where you want to go and what you want to see and do before you book your Kerala hostel, as some of the hostels are not in prime locations for tourists visiting.
