Altenberg, a traditional mining town with its landmark hollow (a collapsed mine), is situated in the east of the Erzgebirge mountain range, 760 m above sea level. The hostel is located 200m from the town?s outskirts in a wooded area. Close by there are an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, a summer toboggan run, a bobsleigh run, a ski lift and cross-country tracks.

This place is well known for its checkpoint on the Czech border, its biathlon athletes and most of all as a ski resort. The scattered settlement (1378) is situated on the crest of the Erzgebirge Mountains between Dresden and Prague. The ridge area is known for its rugged beauty, quite different from the larger promontory towns. Zinnwald and Georgenfeld are among the highest villages in the Saxon part of the Erzgebirge Mountains, with pretty reliable snowfall and panoramic views of Bohemia....
