About Mont St. Michel Hostels
The Mont Saint Michel is one of the most recognizable sights in the world. This monastery surrounded by a medieval village perched on top of a small hill in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is a fantastic sight no matter what the weather is like.
When you get to the Mont itself, after enjoying the scenery from outside, you should go into the city proper. There is only one entrance from the sea. Once inside, you will then need to climb up a mix of stairs and steep cobbled streets to get to the monastery.
All the way up to the entrance of the monastery you will be surrounded by souvenir shops, hotels, and restaurants. Don't hesitate to take a break and enjoy the fantastic scenery while perched on the village walls. Even if the entry fee is not a bargain don't miss the visit of the inside of the monastery, you will be in for a treat.
The selection of hostels in Mont Saint Michel is very limited so it is strongly recommended to book your bed in advance. They tend to be crowded with tourists all year long. If you don't get a hostel in Mont St. Michel you will have to book a hostel in Cancale which is the nearest town with backpacker facilities.
If you don't want to pay tourist prices for basic foods, don't forget to bring some with you, since there's no grocery shop in the village. Even a simple omelette, the village specialty will cost you an incredible price, but they will tell you it’s not a simple omelette… you can at least watch them preparing it for free at the ‘mere brazier’ restaurant.
There are some fantastic hikes around Mont St. Michel, but don't go on your own, because you'll be risking your life with the fast tidal waves and the unreliable sand, so join a group guided trip. Getting to Mont St. Michel is easy by public transportation from the nearby train stations.
