Santa Elena is the major town situated right outside the Monteverde National Park; it's the town where you will find most of the hostels and amenities in the area. The town of Santa Elena is based around a triangle stretch of road where you will find most of your Santa Elena hostels, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, tour companies, and anything else that you might need during your stay here.
The region around Santa Elena is spectacular and there is so much to see and do around the area. You can get super crazy and take your chances with bungee jumping, jumping from massive Tarzan swings, canyoning, and ziplining with multiple different companies that offer these types of adventures just out of town.
From the town center, they have buses that leave for the Monteverde National Park where you can explore your way through the cloud forest and hopefully see some of the magnificent wildlife for which Costa Rica is so famous! Another way to get among the wildlife when it is at its most active is to take one of the many night tours through the forests where the guides will help you find animals such as sloths, porcupines, armadillos, tarantulas, and a variety of other insects. It really is quite spectacular to see all of these animals hanging out in the wild. They also have insectariums, butterfly farms, and frog and reptile sanctuaries here. Some of these sanctuaries can be a bit expensive. They do have a free hummingbird and monkey garden that you can explore -- this is also nice.
There are some free walks close to the town center of Santa Elena and there is also the Hollow Tree, which you can climb from the inside up to sixty feet and peek your head out over the treetops if you are on a tight budget and can't afford to do many of the other activities, which can be expensive (keep that in mind when you are budgeting).
