Easter Island Hostels

Easter Island. Isla de Pascua. Rapa Nui. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s a destination quite unlike any other and an experience you won’t forget if you can stretch your budget to make it this far. The magical, mystical, mysterious moai may haunt your dreams for months afterwords.

There is one town on tiny Easter Island – Hanga Roa – and this is the base for all travelers to the islands as there are no facilities elsewhere. There is a hostel in Hanga Roa. The town is very small, and the airport is walking distance from downtown. Nightlife is limited, but there is a discoteca or two and an array of restaurants in town, some of which also offer nightly cultural shows with local dance and music.

There is no public bus service, but there are a multitude of car, scooter, and bike rental places who will be more than happy to provide you with transportation. Tour agencies also abound, particularly on the main street, and they will happily take you on full or half-day tours of the major sights of the island. For the hardy, some sites are also within reach of town for a day’s hike of the hostel – bring plenty of water and snacks if you choose this, as there is nowhere outside of town to stock up.

Hanga Roa hostels are limited – there is an HI-affiliated hostel whose staff will meet your flight at the airport and take you back again when you’re ready to leave. Currently wifi and internet are not available, as this is very expensive on Easter Island.
