Annapolis Royal is one of the oldest French settlements from the early 1600s, and is home to many popular national historical sites. Within the region is the popular Fort Anne, which is Canada's oldest historical site that was home to many a battle between the French and the English in an effort to take a stronghold on this area of the Annapolis Basin. Port-Royal, also worth a visit, is a reconstruction of the Habitation of the French colony that originally settled here. It is reconstructed from many of the original drawings and documents that were the basis of this settlement. Also of significance to the history of the area is the less-well-known Melanson Settlement, which is also a national historical site and worth a visit if you have time in the area.
The streets of Annapolis Royal have full original arts and crafts shops as well as cafes and restaurants selling local produce. There is a very individual and wholesome feel to the place; it's a great place to spend the day. For other things to do here, go and see the helpful staff at the visitor center (which is unique in that it is home to the only tidal power station in North America and there is an exhibit with information about it on the top floor of the visitor center).
Hostels in Annapolis Royal are not located within the downtown center of Annapolis Royal itself, but in towns on the outskirts. It is a good idea to do your research into your Annapolis Royal hostel's location, so that you can arrange for any supplies that you might need. It is also very useful to travel with a car around this area, as there are not many other alternatives to getting around and visiting the attractions.
