"The Kingstown Barracks YHA isn't really a "hostel" in the traditional sense; it's just the only dormitory accommodation available on Rottnest Island, so if you want to stay overnight on the island it's your only choice. On the up side, it's very clean and well-maintained; on the down, don't expect any of the "extras" you get with some hostels. While it does have a kitchen and a lounge with a TV (and a very expensive Internet terminal), there's only a staff member at the hostel until 2:00...

Rottnest Island Travel Tips & Suggestions

Rottnest is just a beautiful place to go when you have had enough of the city. I went snorkeling and saw a stingray and saw dolphins from the pier. The quokkas are just the cutest thing you have ever seen -- they are a cross between possums and a wallaby. I recommend going, and spending a night there.

Rottnest Island is a jewel - and we hope its character is not spoiled by the pressures of developers and the desire to further commercialize its qualities. Seeing quokkas waddle into the road every so often was a thrill, and the scenery (beautiful bays, beaches, and gorgeous views from almost every spot) was magnificent. Bicycling was excellent and the frequency of hills made the ride even more interesting. What a very special place and one we recommend a traveller not miss it if in the Perth area.

Rottnest is a beautiful island, loved the quokkas! It's easy to get around, though if you're cycling, make sure your bike has a padded saddle (ouch!). The snorkelling was amazing, beaches immaculate. Nice friendly people on the island. Very well setup for tourists, the Rottnest Island tourism office at Fremantle was excellent, very good service. Nice cuppa at the Dome. The ferry ride was good, be sure to go on a sunny day to see it in all its glory! If you get the chance, make a trip to Rotto a priority!

I found Rottnest to be a very charming place and was only there on a day trip from Perth, so I soon realised that even for a small place we didn't have enough time to do everything we wanted. Needless to say, I will be going back, even though it is quite a long haul from London UK. Some bike riding blew away the cobwebs that had gathered over a week of trouncing round the bars and resturants of Perth. And then all was well to do some snorkeling which threw up some yellowfin tuna and black bream to be gawped at in amazment by the old wreck that is quite near to shore. Very friendly people on the island, apart from one oldish gentleman who lived on the island and seemed to be trying to scare away anyone that might look like a tourist, with the help of a bottle of bundy.
