Looking for budget stays in Stawell? This section is designed to save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. We've got insider tips to help you find affordable hostels and the cheapest places to stay in Stawell.
Stawell was settled in the mid-nineteenth century by several thousand people in search of gold and large fortunes -- the area of Wimmera Valley all the way through to Ballarat was rich in gold. After the gold mines shut down, the town sustained itself on farming, wool, and flour mills -- and still does to this day.
As far as things to see and do, year-round you can visit the historic precinct, the Stawell museum, and the Hall of Fame for the Stawell Gift (Australia's oldest running and most prestigious running race). It happens every year during the Easter break and draws exceptionally large crowds, so if you are traveling to Stawell during this time, it is wise to book your accommodation well in advance. Other once-a-year events that happen in Stawell are the Jazz Festival, the Gourmet Festival, and the Hot Air Balloon Festival; these are good to check out if you can be here during the times of the year that they run.
One must-see, nearby attraction is Grampians National Park, which has some spectacular scenery and amazing views from the mountains over the valley. The national park is also home to an abundance of native Australian wildlife.
Hostels in Stawell are not within the center of Stawell itself, but instead are located a short, fifteen-minute drive from the city center. You should have a car if you intend to book a hostel here, as the amenities you may require are not easy to get to without one. Large supermarkets, banks, and medical facilities are within the town center.
