About Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is mainly a backpacker town on the coast, in between travel to or from Cairns and Sydney. It is a short, but not to be missed, stopover in East coast travel.
If you have rented a car or camper van, it is easy to find a Hervey Bay hostel. But if you are taking a bus, it may be harder to reach some of the scattered hostels around the town. If you arrange in advance, several of the hostels offer pick-up from bus stops. The Esplanade is the main beach area along the water, and Torquay is in town. Hervey Bay is the place to stay in if you want to go to the magnificently beautiful sand island, Fraser Island. The other place is Rainbow Island, but Hervey Bay offers a lot more in shops, gorgeous beaches, and good hostels. Your Hervey Bay hostel can organize a trip for you to Fraser Island. A organized tour is recommended as it is required to to have an all-terrain vehicle with 4-wheel drive. Day tours, or 2-3 day tours where you stay on the island in resorts or campsites, are also offered.
Fraser Island is a unique place, and a must see in Australia, as it is the only place where rainforest trees grow out of sand. Also, the purest dingos in Australia run along its shores and rainforests, and they aren't shy, most visitors catch a quick glimpse. Rainbow sands, beautiful lakes with pure silica sand, and an ancient shipwreck are some of the other sights you will see on an organized tour.

Hervey Bay Hostel - Colonial Village YHA
Hervey Bay Town
"Like all the hostels in Hervey Bay, HI - Hervey Bay - Colonial Village YHA Hostel is located about an hour's walk away from the bus drop-off, however there is a hostel-provided, free shuttle bus service, which is very useful! The hostel has quite a relaxed feel and the staff are very welcoming -- you even get free muffins and juice on arrival! The Location The hostel is quite a distance from the bus dropoff and the main shopping area of...
Aussie Woolshed Backpackers
"Aussie Woolshed Backpackers offers a very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff who try to help you wherever they can. Entering the garden area, you have a beautiful maintained but "wild" garden which makes you feel like at home immediately. It contains a little lake, many sitting areas, and hanging mats near the BBQ area to chill out with your friends or meet the other travelers. The Location The hostel is located no more than ten...
Palace Backpackers - Hervey Bay
"Palace Backpackers - Hervey Bay is average. It serves backpackers going to or coming from Fraser Island, many of which stay here for a night or two. The atmosphere is quiet during daytime because most of the people are on Fraser Island but the hostel comes to life every night at 6 p.m. when a new batch of travelers arrive. Palace Backpackers is a part of Palace Adventures which organises tours to Fraser Island and the Whitsundays. The...
Mango Eco Tourist Hostel
"I had a great time in Hervey Bay and on Fraser Island. The people at the Mango Hostel were really helpful with suggestions to experience this part of Australia while getting away from mainstream tourists. The hostel itself is really fantastic. I felt welcomed and had a very homey stay. I can only recommend this place to all travelers." … "Mango Hostel was the best hostel to stay in by far. Illi and Phil are the most caring and helpful...
The Friendly Hostel
"Hervey Bay may not have much going for it (Fraser Island aside), but staying at the Friendly Hostel will certainly remedy that. The hostel is centrally located in the Scarness area of Hervey Bay. It's a good ten- to fifteen-minute walk to any decent shop and the beachfront, so a little isolated. Although the hostel is not within easy walking distance the hostel will collect you from the Greyhound dropoff point. Oddly enough though, they won't...

A1 Fraser Roving Backpacker Resort
"A big, well-equipped hostel with a nice bar. You will have no problem finding it, right on the esplanade of Hervey bay. It is quite central, with many stores and tour booking agencies nearby. However, like most places in town, it is not so close to the Urangan Jetty, where all the boats for Fraser island and for whale-watching cruises depart from. However, in most cases, pick-up can be arranged. The hostel is built on a large area, and...
Fraser Coast Top Tourist Park
"Fraser Escape is the perfect access route to Fraser Island, one of the things to do whilst traveling down the east coast of Oz. We were here in December 2004 for a total of two nights (one before and one after visiting the island). At the time it cost AUS$9 to stay per night (less than £4), so it was ridiculously cheap but you sure didn't get a lot for your money. We stayed in one of the caravan-cum-chalets and it was basic to the extreme but...

Kookaburra Backpacker Hostel
"Hervey Bay is quite a large resort with many backpackers stopping here in order to connect with tours to Fraser Island. The hostel itself is just out of town, but they run a free shuttle service to and from the coach terminal. The hostel is better suited to younger backpackers with a cheery party atmosphere most evenings as most guests are looking forward to or have just returned from Fraser Island. The hostel offers cheap meals in the...
Beaches Backpacker Resort - Hervey Bay
"Beaches Backpacker Resort is not exactly located on the waterfront as it's name suggests, but it's close to the Hervey Bay beach and shops. It's a long way from the bus station, so don't think of getting there on foot. Fortunately they have a pick up and drop off service when you arrive and depart. But you must ring ahead to give them the time. And you can jump in other days for a lift as well. The accommodations are nice, arranged in...

We have free tour bookings lifts to all levels, keyless...

We had the best time here -- it was the best part of our entire trip.

There's nothing to do in Hervey Bay. Make sure you get on a three-day, two-night 4x4 tour, which actually works out cheaper anyway.
