About Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is mainly a backpacker town on the coast, in between travel to or from Cairns and Sydney. It is a short, but not to be missed, stopover in East coast travel.
If you have rented a car or camper van, it is easy to find a Hervey Bay hostel. But if you are taking a bus, it may be harder to reach some of the scattered hostels around the town. If you arrange in advance, several of the hostels offer pick-up from bus stops. The Esplanade is the main beach area along the water, and Torquay is in town. Hervey Bay is the place to stay in if you want to go to the magnificently beautiful sand island, Fraser Island. The other place is Rainbow Island, but Hervey Bay offers a lot more in shops, gorgeous beaches, and good hostels. Your Hervey Bay hostel can organize a trip for you to Fraser Island. A organized tour is recommended as it is required to to have an all-terrain vehicle with 4-wheel drive. Day tours, or 2-3 day tours where you stay on the island in resorts or campsites, are also offered.
Fraser Island is a unique place, and a must see in Australia, as it is the only place where rainforest trees grow out of sand. Also, the purest dingos in Australia run along its shores and rainforests, and they aren't shy, most visitors catch a quick glimpse. Rainbow sands, beautiful lakes with pure silica sand, and an ancient shipwreck are some of the other sights you will see on an organized tour.

Beaches Backpackers - Hervey Bay
"Beaches Backpacker Resort is not exactly located on the waterfront as it's name suggests, but it's close to the Hervey Bay beach and shops. It's a long way from the bus station, so don't think of getting there on foot. Fortunately they have a pick up and drop off service when you arrive and depart. But you must ring ahead to give them the time. And you can jump in other days for a lift as well. The accommodations are nice, arranged in...
Aussie Woolshed Backpackers
"Aussie Woolshed Backpackers offers a very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff who try to help you wherever they can. Entering the garden area, you have a beautiful maintained but "wild" garden which makes you feel like at home immediately. It contains a little lake, many sitting areas, and hanging mats near the BBQ area to chill out with your friends or meet the other travelers. The Location The hostel is located no more than ten...
"Kondari Hotel is a popular choice amongst travelers in Hervey Bay, whether exploring or just passing through. The hotel has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Facilities for disabled guests, Wi-Fi in public areas, car park, meeting facilities, business center are just some of the facilities on offer. Each guestroom is elegantly furnished and equipped with handy amenities. Take a break from a long day and make use of outdoor pool,...
Mango Eco Tourist Hostel
"Rude owner - The house is very pretty and clean. But the owner became very rude, when I booked a different tour for Fraser Island than the one he recommended and he called my decision "weird" and "strange." He even told the other guests about my "mistake." I wouldn't go back to this hostel. However, I had a very good time on Fraser." … "Feels like home! - Stayed at this hostel for four nights. The prices are great and the hostel is...
"If you visit Hervey Bay, this is the place to go! - It is a very clean and friendly hostel. Clean kitchen, very clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, and good washing facilities. Not much to do in Hervey Bay in the evening, but sitting around in the wonderful TV-room (excellent and loads of DVDs to choose from) or have a (cheap) drink inside the hostel. Staff is always friendly, especially the manager. He was a tourguide on Fraser for several...
The Friendly Hostel
"Hervey Bay may not have much going for it (Fraser Island aside), but staying at the Friendly Hostel will certainly remedy that. The hostel is centrally located in the Scarness area of Hervey Bay. It's a good ten- to fifteen-minute walk to any decent shop and the beachfront, so a little isolated. Although the hostel is not within easy walking distance the hostel will collect you from the Greyhound dropoff point. Oddly enough though, they won't...

Flashpackers Hervey Bay
"I'll come back at any time - Excellent hostel whether you're looking for relax or party. Everything is new and clean, both the manager and the German guy at the reception desk are excellent. They give you advice on everything and are very helpful. The dorms area is extremely quiet, but at the same time the provide guesses with a terrace away from that area so that you can have a drink or chat with other people. They pick you up at the bus...

Fraser Roving Backpacker Hostel
"A big, well-equipped hostel with a nice bar. You will have no problem finding it, right on the esplanade of Hervey bay. It is quite central, with many stores and tour booking agencies nearby. However, like most places in town, it is not so close to the Urangan Jetty, where all the boats for Fraser island and for whale-watching cruises depart from. However, in most cases, pick-up can be arranged. The hostel is built on a large area, and...
"… area has tables and chairs under-cover with male and female toilets and showers. Our higher levels and penthouse apartments have uninterrupted views across the Great Sandy Straits to Fraser Island. The kitchens are stylish and more than well equipped. We believe all the little luxuries count and have included coffee machine and sandwich makers in some apartments, come and see the fish that swim up the side of the building, also...

Colonial Village Cabins, Camping & Tours
"Like all the hostels in Hervey Bay, HI - Hervey Bay - Colonial Village YHA Hostel is located about an hour's walk away from the bus drop-off, however there is a hostel-provided, free shuttle bus service, which is very useful! The hostel has quite a relaxed feel and the staff are very welcoming -- you even get free muffins and juice on arrival! The Location The hostel is quite a distance from the bus dropoff and the main shopping area of...

Fraser Coast Top Tourist Park
"Fraser Escape is the perfect access route to Fraser Island, one of the things to do whilst traveling down the east coast of Oz. We were here in December 2004 for a total of two nights (one before and one after visiting the island). At the time it cost AUS$9 to stay per night (less than £4), so it was ridiculously cheap but you sure didn't get a lot for your money. We stayed in one of the caravan-cum-chalets and it was basic to the extreme but...

Hervey Bay Travel Tips & Suggestions
We had the best time here -- it was the best part of our entire trip.
— Jenna, Sarah and Kaz..
There's nothing to do in Hervey Bay. Make sure you get on a three-day, two-night 4x4 tour, which actually works out cheaper anyway.
