Situated in far northern New South Wales between Ballina and Byron Bay, Lennox Head is a small seaside town where backpackers can relax at a hostel and experience classic Australian surfing culture away from the crowds. It offers a laid-back alternative to larger, more famous surfing hubs such as the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, and the Sunshine Coast, and is a perfect stop for independent travelers who are craving some rest and relaxation before continuing further on their journey.
The main backpacker drawcard for Lennox Head is its awesome beaches, and its dramatic headland and Seven Mile Beach are legendary in Australian surfing circles. Apart from surfing, there is much to see and do in the area, including lazing on the beach, swimming, kite-surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddling, sailing, and cycling. Lennox Head is also a popular hang-gliding spot, so if you’re a bit of a daredevil you might also want to take some lessons. Lennox Head’s beautiful long beaches are also perfect for beachcombing, and from May to October whales can often be spotted as they migrate along the coast.
This part of northern New South Wales is extremely beautiful, so if you have your own transport be sure to do some exploring, both along the coast and in the mountainous sub-tropical hinterland. As well as larger towns like Ballina and Lismore, there are also lots of pretty villages in the area, many which hold artisan and produce markets on the weekend. Situated next to Lake Ainsworth, Lennox Head Markets are held every second and fifth Sunday of the month and are well worth checking out if you’re in town.
If you’re a nature-lover, there are also many national parks and nature reserves close by, where you can see native flora and fauna in their natural environment. Most of these have walking trails ranging from short strolls to serious hikes lasting several hours. Ask at your Lennox Head hostel for more details. If you’re wanting to surf or cycle but don’t have your own equipment this is also available for hire at most local backpacker hostels.
Situated just a few kilometres from the Pacific Highway, linking Sydney and Brisbane, Lennox Head is extremely accessible, whether you have your own car or are using public transport. The Ballina Byron Airport is also very close by.
