The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … The Cabin is great. The owners are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and they go out of their way to help hikers. The bunkhouse is very comfortable. This is one of about a half-dozen primo places on the AT (Appalachian Trail).
Mount Desert Island Bar Harbor Hostel in Bar Harbor … This hostel was terrific! It was clean, cool, quiet, and centrally located near the village in Bar Harbor. The owner, Nova, was a very nice person and was very helpful regarding local information. The other staff person, Jessica, was really great and is a real world traveler with lots of interesting stories. I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone who will be visiting Bar Harbor and Arcadia National Park.
The Historic Wood-Foote Hostel in Wiscasset … Steve, the owner of the Historic Wood-Foote Hostel, was very welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We had a nice, clean room with freshly washed linens. He gave us directions to restaurants and beaches in the area. My beautiful son, Taylor, and I shared an extra special time there together in the Summer of 2004. I will never forget it.
Mount Desert Island Bar Harbor Hostel in Bar Harbor … This hostel is beautiful — totally remodeled, clean, modern, and in a perfect location. A "must visit!"
The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … This is a great hostel! But the directions are a little fuzzy -- the highway off of Rt. 2 is Highway 5-North -- be sure to note this as I got a little lost thinking from the descripton to take "Rt. 2" to the hostel. you really need to take 5 north off of Rt. 2 between Rumford and Bethel. The owners are a terrific couple who really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone who would like to stay in the Maine woods.
Andover Guest House in Andover … Andover Guest house was a great, clean, wonderful place to stay while hiking the AT. Our hostess was very friendly and helpful. There's a large kitchen (and I advise you do your own cooking) -- no place in town to buy "good" food. Help the economy of Andover and stay at the Guest House!
The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … A very nice place indeed. It caters to through hikers and is really set up to help with transportation, rest, trail food, and temporary clothes as well as laundry set, nice bunks, clean sheets, and great meals. I am a through hiker, as in "I'm through hiking" (at 67, I don't have the stamina anymore, I go for hikes of a few miles only and mostly car camp in campgrounds). But I loved my visit to The Cabin and talking with real hikers of the AT staying there. Our host arranged for me to take a through hiker from Andover to Stratton to keep a time commitment to meet someone on time at Katahdin. Wonderful drive and nice talking to my passenger, who was skipping ahead on the trail but planning to come back and complete the AT later.
The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … Wonderful hospitality and food.
The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … This hostel kept us on the trail when we were ready to give it up. This is hiker heaven!
Mount Desert Island Bar Harbor Hostel in Bar Harbor … Best American Hostel I've stayed in. The fresh-painted primary colors lift your spirits. It's sparkling clean and neat. The bathroom is right next to the women's dorm room. The guests were quite fascinating and from all corners of the globe. Both my daughter (twenty-something) and I (not retired yet) enjoyed our visit and will probably go back. Of course, Acadia is one of the most unique places in the U.S. with its varied environments -- harbors, rocky coast, fishing villages, forests, hills, and beaches.
The Cabin in Maine in East Andover … I have visited the cabin many times. Always a pleasure!
The Historic Wood-Foote Hostel in Wiscasset … The Wood-Foote Hostel is a FABULOUS place to stay if you're looking for a classic, historic hostel a couple of blocks away from the heart of a true Maine village. Steve, the owner, was amazing and accommodating. The entire place is very clean and felt like home the entire time I was there. In fact, I ended up increasing my stay because it is in such a central location to so many things (Boston, Boothbay Harbor, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit....). I'll definitely be returning!
