Chiang Khong city is a small and quiet place with a great view. People are very friendly. There's no nightlife. It's cheaper to stay here before crossing Mekong River to Laos.
I had the best time of my life in Chiang Khong! Don't miss it! Go to the Bamboo Riverside Guesthouse for AMAZING quesaldillas and then on to the Tee Pee Bar ("like a rat hole - you can't miss it.") For music and entertainment all night on guitar. Sing along and bring a guitar if you have one! Just watch out for the dogs on your way back to your hostel!
On the way from Chiang Khong to Chiang Saen, it's great to rent a motorbike for visiting the old city.
Now Tee Pee Bar is closed for a long time. New Bar is next to Madam pub (only one in Chiang Khong).
Chiang Khong I was here for a few days. I visited Hmong Hilltribe Village here. It's ten kilometers from city by bike -- nice people and simple life.
Chat House in Chiang Rai It is a good experiment here in the Chat House. Smiling faces are not only in the Chat House, but are also found in the neighbourhood!
Chat House in Chiang Rai Chat House is a great place to chill. The owner, Malai, is very friendly and makes everyone feel very welcome, and she's a great cook. Try the barbecue river fish and chili sauce, my staple diet whilst staying at Chat House. Chat House is tucked away up a small back soi [lane], just far enough away from the main bustle (if you can call it that) of Chang Rai. The safaris organized by staff onsite are an excellent way to meet the hill tribe peoples, without the big group.
Highly recommended. This is definitely a home away from home.
Chat House in Chiang Rai I have been staying at Chat House for six years. And I'll always think of the Chat House as my home in Thailand. The food is great and everything you want is there and everybody is so friendly.
Lek House in Chiang Rai I planned to stay two days but ended up staying six. Everything in this guesthouse was new. The new owner opened its doors beginning 2009 and the room was spacious and clean. The bed was very comfortable with a soft mattress, good pillows, and air conditioning. The bathroom has a nice hot shower and the soft towels were a treat. The room also had stocked minibar and satellite TV and with a swimming pool where you can sit at the bar it was a real surprise what you get for as little you have to pay. The staff is very friendly and nothing was too much. Through the back door there is a local favorite Thai restaurant by the same owner where they have seriously good food at unbelievable cheap prices. I recommend this guesthouse to all those who pass through Chiang Rai on their way to Laos or Myanmar and I will certainly stay here again on my return.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong I stayed here for about 10 days in March 2004. Don't be too quick to jump on that boat over to Laos, stay a while and find the unexplored beauty in the untouched surroundings. You'll find the locals so friendly. I spent most of my days out on the river with the locals, playing bowls, drinking in the evenings and singing Thai songs. I would really like to find out the e-mail address.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong The Bamboo Riverside Guest House is awesome. It's a great place to pass the days reading as the Mekhong slowly drifts by in front of you. Husband and wife Jib and Taew run the place and Taew makes the most incredible food! Do yourself a favor and order a plate of the Mexican nachos and one of the Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas (Taew's Indian Curry Chicken is also outstanding).
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong I have stayed at Bamboo several times and would recommend it to anyone. Great location and views of the Mekhong and Laos. Wonderful Mexican and Thai food and very clean rooms.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong Hi Jib and Taew!! The Bamboo Guesthouse is AWESOME. Jib makes you feel like family and Taew takes you under her wing as if you were her own. Hows MIM? Their Daughter!! I have stayed at Bamboo several times, the first time I was gonna stay for a couple of nights and ended up staying around 20 nihgts in the dorm (spotless and clean). I have ended up there several times again Everytime is better than the last (if that can be)..Cant wait to stay at the BAMBOO GH again and see my GOOD friends Jib and Taew. The Mekhong is absolutely breath taking, especially the view from the upstairs restaurant. Great job on this Guest House.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong I love this place, and stay there whenever I pass through Chiang Khong. December is peak season in Thailand, so of course there are a lot of tourists. And it's great, because otherwise the Bambook Riverside (and every other guesthouse in Thailand or anywhere in the world) couldn't survive without tourists to fill the rooms ....
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong Great! Absolutely clean and the Mexican food is good. Highly recommended.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong Stopped by on my way to Laos. I slept in one of the bungalows, which indeed was very clean and very comfortable. Not sure about the Mexican food though, and the whole place felt quite touristy even though it was December. Else waking and seeing the Mekong is great.
Bamboo Riverside Guest House in Chiang Khong Very friendly people, great view, great food. I had a 300 baht room (oct 2006), but there was one very negative experience in my opinion -- the room was full of ants! And not the small, but the big ones. I used some of my spray to keep them away from the bed, but i really hate ants in my bed. Otherwise, this guesthouse would have been great. Maybe I just had bad luck, but I don't really like this.
