The main reasons people come to Zermatt are for the Matterhorn and the skiing. There are great views of the Matterhorn and other mountains from the town (and better views from Kleine Matterhorn and Gornergrat) and most of the skiing is in the difficult range.
Fiesch i thoroughly enjoyed the Eggishorn of Fiesh. I am thirteen years old and it was one of the best holidays of my life. I especially liked the Panorama and the Route 75. I feel I have learned a lot.
Zermatt It's spectacular. You can ski across the border to Italy and back for a great day out.
HI - Jugendherberge Zermatt Hostel in Zermatt This is by far the best hostel I've ever stayed in. Sure, it's a bit of a walk, but it's not that bad and the view more than makes up for it. The whole place was recently refurbished, staff were ok and spoke good English, and the meals (included in the price) were excellent. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
Hotel Bahnhof in Zermatt The staff's hospitality is second to none. The accommodation and facilities are excellent. It's a very welcoming, cozy, and affordable retreat in the mountains.
Chalet Pension Bon-Abri in Champex I was here during a Tour du Mont Blanc trip in early June 2001 (yes, that's pre-season for this walk) -- it's basically on the TMB route. it's a wonderful place -- even more so when you discover that the 'dark wood' that it's made of is in fact weathered steel.
HI - Jugendherberge Zermatt Hostel in Zermatt Fantastic. Helpful, friendly and efficient staff -- the whole hostel is run with atomic precision -- well what else would you expect in Switzerland?
This hostel is also the best deal in Zermatt -- which is an expensive resort.
HI - Jugendherberge Zermatt Hostel in Zermatt Worth the walk. When I stayed there in May 1992 I had a room to myself on the third floor. I remember having the lace-curtained windows open at night looking at the most beautiful night sky I have ever seen anywhere in the world to this day. Bright stars, millions more I have never seen before. The moon and the Matterhorn were magical. Down the road had raclette and wine by the fire. Excellent accommodations, clean and friendly, highly recommend. I hope to visit again!
Hotel Bahnhof in Zermatt The most friendly owners you could wish to meet in the most fantastic surroundings. Excellent facilities throught the hotel -- especially the kitchen! Looking forward to my next stay.
HI - Jugendherberge Zermatt Hostel in Zermatt This hostel is brilliant!!! It has had a complete refurbishment very recently, and it is just gorgeous - very modern, clean, and nice. Breakfast AND dinner are included in the dormroom price, which makes it worth every cent - a meal in Zermatt would cost you a fortune otherwise (and my meal was delicious)! I cannot rate the place highly enough, this has been my favourite HI in Europe so far.
Verbier Backpacker's & The Bunker in Verbier The Bunker is the best place to stay for those of us on strict budgets. The package deals are unbeatable. Beds are nice, the bus to lifts is right outside, and there are bars within walking distance. The free showers, meals, pool, and Jacuzzi are all fantastic. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Matterhorn Hostel in Zermatt Whatever issues the booking may have, the lady at the front desk is great. I forgot my wedding ring in the bathroom, and they're mailing it to me. That's great service and saves me a beating from my wife.
Matterhorn Hostel in Zermatt The building is old with steep narrow staircases and tiny rooms with bunk beds sandwiched in -- typical hostel in that regard. Could use a few more toilets. The "kitchen" is a room with a hot water pitcher. The location is phenomenal, however. The views from the hostel are amazing. The beds are comfortable. Everything is clean. There are free lockers (with locks of dubious merit). The staff is friendly. There's free high-quality WiFi. Great showers. There's also no "hostel smell!" It's a bit of a walk from the train station, but there is a city bus you can take if you don't want to walk twenty minutes.
Matterhorn Hostel in Zermatt The matterhorn hostel is your basic place to get your head down, the lockers are big enough for skis (or climbing gear in my case), and the rooms are fine. After all, you are not going to be sitting inside all day unless your legs are broken. The best part is the bar. The staff are great, they do good food and the beer is cheap compared to town prices (gasp). I will be back for more climbing and I would stay here again unless I win the lottery.
Matterhorn Hostel in Zermatt The location of this hostel is beautiful. As you look out the bedroom window, you can see the sun shining on the Matterhorn. The management, under Paul, were so friendly and helpful. My friend and I
(seniors) have stayed here four times. Loved it!
