Oban is a really cute place. You stay here for a night as part of the wonderful Macbackpackers tours and that's enough time to look around. Go to the old fashioned lollie shop. It's FABULOUS!!!
I was in Oban in August 2006 and I found it a very nice place -- quiet, small, perfect to visit by walking, and the inhabitants were tremendously kind. I loved its marine atmosphere and its "strange" weather -- it rained for ten minutes, then it stopped and there was sun for ten minutes more, and then it began raining again for ten minutes, then sunny. It was fun! Oh, and don't forget to raise your sight to the top of the hill -- you will see something like a coliseum, which actually is the mausoleum of a town's rich man.
When in Oban be sure to eat some Irish stew at O'Donnell's Irish Pub. The food is great and the staff is amazing.
We went with a youth group and it was the best trip I've ever experienced and we're hoping to go again. It woz the best ever. GO TO THE Isle of Mull ITS BRILLIANT.
Isle of Mull was absolutley fantastic. The best experience of my life.
Isle of Kerrera We visited from Australia and thought the island was WONDERFUL, the scenery was MAGNIFICENT, and the Ferryman Duncan was ever so helpful. We will be returning.
Jeremy Inglis Hostel in Oban Being here is like visiting your grandparents.
Bridge of Orchy Hotel Bunkhouse in Bridge of Orchy I have visited this hostel on a number of occasions and have enjoyed my stay very much and look forward to my next visit very much. The staff are extremely helpful and very pleasant (especially the receptionist -- whose name I think is Madge). Anyway I'd advise a stay at this bunkhouse and a meal in the hotel which is fab (especially the breakfasts).
Oban Backpackers in Oban Great hostel!! Really cool bunkbeds, nice clean sheets, clean bathrooms, and incredible staff!!! They have a nice big kitchen and big common room. Oban is a really pretty little town and worth a visit. They have breakfast for 1.90 (pounds) and it's a pretty good value. I would definitely recommend it, and I would stay here again in an instant!!
Bridge of Orchy Hotel Bunkhouse in Bridge of Orchy our party of four stayed at the bridge of orchy bunkhouse in may 2007 whilst walking the west highland way, and after reading some of your comments were a little apprehensive of what to expect. we were pleasantly surprised, everywhere was very clean, and beds -- although not the most comfortable -- had pillows, sheets, and duvets supplied. the food in the hotel was excellent and staff were attentive and friendly. for breakfast there was a choice of menus with different tariffs. we had a most enjoyable stay and we thought it was great value for money.
Oban Backpackers in Oban My friend and I stayed at hostels all over Europe this past month, and this one has to be the best! The beds are comfortable (they all have funky names!), the common area is excellent, its very clean, the showers were great, the staff are friendly and helpful (especially Kylie at reception!), and this is such a great seaside town -- you must visit and stay here. We felt so secure here, too. Just be warned that reception closes everyday from one to four-ish (I think for cleaning and such), but you can just set your stuff down, hang out, or go walk around; you'll be fine. Highly recommended.
Oban Youth Hostel in Oban I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed my time at the Oban Youth Hostel! One of the staff (Philip) woke us up on Christmas morning with an impromptu bagpipe concert, and we shared our Christmas dinner with four different nationalities of people. We made fast friends from South Africa and Paris during our weeklong stay, and have exchanged visits with our Parisian friend already. The atmosphere was friendly and warm, the hostel was clean and well kept, and we felt ourselves very safe and slept well. A family of five (mother, father, and three adult children) recommend this hostel to anyone travelling through Oban!
Bridge of Orchy Hotel Bunkhouse in Bridge of Orchy Ive just recently visited again for the umpteenth time. I've stayed in the bunkhouse and it is, after all, a bunkhouse mostly used by walkers and hillclimbers and having managed a youth hostel (used mostly by walkers) I can say that there will be certain smells permeating from within wherever you get well walked walking boots, so this is nothing unusual and is something that even the cleanliest of bunkhouses/hostels suffer from. so it is not a particular fault of the Bridge of Orchy bunkhouse. My opinion is do visit this hotel/bunkhouse -- it's fab. Marge and the staff are terrific. Lastly, I think the world of this place, so much so, brought my boyfriend along for a visit and his opinion is that we will be back (especially since we got engaged whilst we were last there on 2nd March.). So Bridge of Orchy Hotel, keep up the good work and keep smiling Brian and I think you're great.
Oban Backpackers in Oban I stayed here last summer for one night in July and it was brilliant! Everyone staying here and the staff were extremely friendly. There was even a Dutch Air Force pilot in my room! I would recommend this hostel to anyone, if only for those amazingly comfy beds!
Tobermory Youth Hostel in Isle of Mull This is a small cozy hostel on the main street in Tobermory and has the advantage of being accessible by public transport. Main Street runs along the harbor and is packed with colorful buildings. There were some wonderful shops nearby for self-caterers and plenty of eating out options. I was one of few guests there and I had the six-bed dorm to myself. The other guests were a group of cyclists — apparently. I never actually saw them. However, I really enjoyed the break in a beautiful place and I liked the hostel — very homely and comfortable. The self-catering kitchen and dining room was well equipped and the lounge was comfortable, both offering great views. For a night or two, this is a good place to relax.
West Highland Way Sleeper in Bridge of Orchy Immaculate presentation! Very clean. The solidly built bunks and privacy curtains are really great. The video collection is a nice touch, though it seems a shame there are folks arriving in this fabulous location and wanting to sit in front of a small square screen. The welcome is a little Blackpool landlady — somewhat rule-bound and I found myself wondering whether this is really a hostel or a semi-suburban B&B with an identity crisis lost on the West Highland Way.
The bunks look very inviting but I discovered they are barely long enough for a 5'9" female — so they must be really restricting for anyone taller or broader. The mattresses are thick and sprung, but mine felt like I was sleeping on a bag of miscellaneous ironmongery, as the springs stuck out. Others in the dorm agreed. I had nightmares of a gremlin sitting on my chest poking long bony fingers into my ribs. We were in the smaller dorm and could find no opening windows. With five people asleep in a relatively small
Oban Backpackers in Oban This is a really well priced and very clean hostel. I think it's probably one of the best in Scotland.
Oban Youth Hostel in Oban A good hostel in an absolutely beautiful area of Scotland's west coast. The hostel is right on the water (almost everything in Oban is) an features a comfortable lounge, and a large dining room. I was travelling with someone so being bored was not a problem, but it might not be the best hostel to stay at if you want to meet new people. We did, but the friendships were never anything more than superficial. Breakfast was not included, but there was a very large and well equipped kitchen. My only gripe was that the hostel is on the opposite end of the city from the train station. It was only a 10-15 minute walk along one street (the hostel is NOT hard to find, just continue walking keeping the water on your left), though. But with large bags it got to be a little much. There are lockers that you can use (for free, bring your own lock) but they are so inobtrusive that we didn't even realize they were there until our third night at the hostel. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, SINGLE
