I was in Oban in August 2006 and I found it a very nice place -- quiet, small, perfect to visit by walking, and the inhabitants were tremendously kind. I loved its marine atmosphere and its "strange" weather -- it rained for ten minutes, then it stopped and there was sun for ten minutes more, and then it began raining again for ten minutes, then sunny. It was fun! Oh, and don't forget to raise your sight to the top of the hill -- you will see something like a coliseum, which actually is the mausoleum of a town's rich man.
Oban is a really cute place. You stay here for a night as part of the wonderful Macbackpackers tours and that's enough time to look around. Go to the old fashioned lollie shop. It's FABULOUS!!!
We went with a youth group and it was the best trip I've ever experienced and we're hoping to go again. It woz the best ever. GO TO THE Isle of Mull ITS BRILLIANT.
Isle of Mull was absolutley fantastic. The best experience of my life.
When in Oban be sure to eat some Irish stew at O'Donnell's Irish Pub. The food is great and the staff is amazing.
Isle of Kerrera … We visited from Australia and thought the island was WONDERFUL, the scenery was MAGNIFICENT, and the Ferryman Duncan was ever so helpful. We will be returning.
Oban Backpackers in Oban … Great hostel!! Really cool bunkbeds, nice clean sheets, clean bathrooms, and incredible staff!!! They have a nice big kitchen and big common room. Oban is a really pretty little town and worth a visit. They have breakfast for 1.90 (pounds) and it's a pretty good value. I would definitely recommend it, and I would stay here again in an instant!!
Bridge of Orchy Hotel Bunkhouse in Bridge of Orchy … I have visited this hostel on a number of occasions and have enjoyed my stay very much and look forward to my next visit very much. The staff are extremely helpful and very pleasant (especially the receptionist -- whose name I think is Madge). Anyway I'd advise a stay at this bunkhouse and a meal in the hotel which is fab (especially the breakfasts).
Tobermory Youth Hostel in Isle of Mull … This is a small cozy hostel on the main street in Tobermory and has the advantage of being accessible by public transport. Main Street runs along the harbor and is packed with colorful buildings. There were some wonderful shops nearby for self-caterers and plenty of eating out options. I was one of few guests there and I had the six-bed dorm to myself. The other guests were a group of cyclists — apparently. I never actually saw them. However, I really enjoyed the break in a beautiful place and I liked the hostel — very homely and comfortable. The self-catering kitchen and dining room was well equipped and the lounge was comfortable, both offering great views. For a night or two, this is a good place to relax.
West Highland Way Sleeper in Bridge of Orchy … Immaculate presentation! Very clean. The solidly built bunks and privacy curtains are really great. The video collection is a nice touch, though it seems a shame there are folks arriving in this fabulous location and wanting to sit in front of a small square screen. The welcome is a little Blackpool landlady — somewhat rule-bound and I found myself wondering whether this is really a hostel or a semi-suburban B&B with an identity crisis lost on the West Highland Way. The bunks look very inviting but I discovered they are barely long enough for a 5'9" female — so they must be really restricting for anyone taller or broader. The mattresses are thick and sprung, but mine felt like I was sleeping on a bag of miscellaneous ironmongery, as the springs stuck out. Others in the dorm agreed. I had nightmares of a gremlin sitting on my chest poking long bony fingers into my ribs. We were in the smaller dorm and could find no opening windows. With five people asleep in a relatively…
Jeremy Inglis Hostel in Oban … I am from Slovakia and I spent 2 days in this hostel and to me it was a great hostel. Maybe it was not as comfortable as other hostels where I stayed, but the comfort is not always the most important thing. The people working there are very friendly and kind. And that is very important because you have a good feeling.
Oban Youth Hostel in Oban … I have stayed in many hostels before, but this one comes near the bottom of my list. Oban is a beautiful town surrounded by stunning scenery and excellent transport connections to the Highlands and Islands. I had a stunning view from my dorm over the bay. But, I have never in my time come across staff that are so rude and unfriendly. I booked it a few weeks before I arrived. On my arrival at reception I told the guy at reception that I had a reservation. He continued with his computer game and ignored me for ages. He eventually said to me gruffly "so what do you want?" I was shocked — I mean how about a room allocation, key, etc? I had already paid in advance or I would have walked out. When I EVENTUALLY got in, it wasn't great. My ten-bed dorm was clean and spacious, but the showers were cool and water pressure was poor. The self-catering kitchen was well equipped and the lounge comfortable. The main problem I had with this place was that it was like a hospital — clean, warm and…
Arle Lodge in Isle of Mull … Slighly more expensive than a hostel but well worth the extra. Superb location, friendly staff, clean and well equipped. Luxurious en-suites available. Pet sheep called Hamish.
